What does it mean to keep curiosity at the heart of a lifelong movement practice?

Movement, Choreography & Education with Struan Leslie

In this episode of The Shapes in Motion Podcast Stephen Moynihan @stmoynihan is joined by Movement Director, Choreographer and Educator Struan Leslie @struanleslie for a conversation spanning movement, dance, theatre, opera, education and performance.

Struan shares his journey from Dundee to working internationally, including his time as Head of Movement at the Royal Shakespeare Company @thersc and the development of the new MFA in Movement Direction at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. @royalwelshmt

Together, Stephen and Struan explore the influences and experiences that have shaped his practice, approaches to movement training and education, interdisciplinary exploration, preparation and the importance of continuing to learn throughout a creative career.

“I talk about preparation all the time in my practice… you prepare for performance, you prepare for rehearsals, so prepare for class, and what does that mean?” Struan Leslie

A rich conversation about where a curiosity for movement can take us and the value of staying open to what we might discover along the way.

Creative work can be wonderfully varied; different rooms, different people, different projects.

But that can also mean continually starting again.

The Troupe grew from a desire to create something with more continuity: a space for movers, performers and curious creative people to come back to. To train, play, exchange ideas, encounter different practices and build relationships over time.

Sometimes we meet in the studio. Sometimes online. Sometimes through a workshop, conversation or shared resource.

The programme changes. The community continues.

Move. Play. Connect. Develop. Discover. Belong.

Troupe membership is currently open and doors close 2 October.

If you’re curious about the Troupe or wondering whether it’s right for you, you’re very welcome to get in touch; message us here, or Sarah directly at @sarah_perry_movement

What happens when we stop thinking of movement, fight and intimacy as separate practices and begin to see them as part of the same physical language?

In this episode of The Shapes in Motion Podcast, @stmoynihan is joined by Fight Director, Movement Director and Intimacy Director @yaritdor for a wide-ranging conversation about her interdisciplinary practice across dance, martial arts, movement, stage combat and intimacy @movingbodyarts

“I believe in the movement umbrella, I believe that fights, intimacy, movement are exactly the same. It’s just the technique, it’s just the safety consideration, it’s just the style is different, but we’re all moving and it’s all a physical script.” - Yarit Dor

Together, Stephen and Yarit explore how these disciplines can inform one another; the importance of communication, trust and boundaries in creating safe and collaborative working environments; and the infrastructure needed to support safer practice.

They also discuss something very close to our hearts at Shapes in Motion: visibility and recognition for movement practitioners.

As Yarit puts it:

“I wanna see the people, I wanna hear the voices, I wanna know the names, because they’re a collaborator just like everyone else. And if we don’t talk about it, if we don’t credit, then we hurt the practice.”

A thoughtful conversation about movement, collaboration, recognition and what becomes possible when we allow our disciplines to connect.

50 episodes of The Shapes in Motion Podcast 🎉

A little moment to celebrate.

Swipe through 50 episodes …

When we started The Shapes in Motion Podcast, we wanted to create a space for conversations about movement, creativity and the people and practices behind the work.

Fifty episodes later, we’ve had the privilege of talking with an extraordinary collection of artists and practitioners, sharing experiences, ideas, questions, challenges and discoveries, and plenty of laughter along the way.

From movement and performance to choreography, directing, teaching, making and creative practice, every conversation has taken us somewhere different, and we’ve loved discovering where they lead.

A huge thank you to every one of our guests for so generously sharing their time, work and stories with us, and to everyone who has listened, shared an episode, sent us a message or joined the conversation. You are all part of it.

And a very special thank you to my brilliant co-host @stmoynihan for 50 episodes of conversations, questions, ideas and laughter and to our wonderful sound producers @cherylburniston & @smccormacksound who work their magic behind the scenes and bring each episode together.

There are so many more conversations still to come.

Here’s to the next 50!

Have a great weekend!

What can the way we move teach us about the way we live?

EPISODE 50 | Acrodance & Movement Beyond Technique with Davide Bonetti

What happens when movement becomes less about what you can perform and more about what you can discover?

In this episode of The Shapes in Motion Podcast, I (@sarah_perry_movement ) am joined by movement practitioner and acrodancer Davide Bonetti @davide_bonez to explore a movement journey shaped by parkour, contemporary circus, breakdance, capoeira, acrodance and, more recently, general movement practice.

‘Parkour started in the streets and it has very beautiful principles behind it. One of them is reconsidering the city as a playground. Also all the relationships between the obstacles that you can find, like physical obstacles like a wall, and also obstacles in life that you want to find a way to overcome. In this sense, I found it very beautiful similarities in the practice and life.’ (Davide Bonetti)

We talk about the evolution from performer to practitioner and teacher; the value of curiosity, adaptability and lifelong learning; and what happens when we begin to look beyond individual disciplines and techniques.

Davide shares how his relationship with movement has shifted over time, from developing physical skill and performing, towards a broader practice centred on exploration, awareness and experience.

We also explore teaching: how we can give people the tools to become independent learners rather than simply asking them to reproduce movement, and how teaching can deepen our own understanding of what we practise. And underneath it all is a bigger conversation: What can the way we move teach us about the way we live?

A thoughtful conversation about movement, curiosity, vitality, learning and the joy of continuing to explore.

Episode 50 of The Shapes in Motion Podcast  is now live: @shapesinmotion

WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR CREATIVE COMMUNITY?

Creative careers don’t always fit neatly into one box.

We might be dancers, actors, physical performers, choreographers, movement directors, puppeteers, intimacy practitioners, movement teachers, makers, or work somewhere between several of those things.

Our practices may look very different.

But there is something that connects us:

Movement.

How we move.
How we communicate through the body.
How movement creates character.
How it tells stories.
How we use it to perform, make, explore, play and connect.

That’s at the heart of Troupe.

A creative community of Actors, Dancer, Movers & Makers brought together through movement, performance and storytelling.

A place to meet people beyond your usual discipline. To exchange ideas. Try things. Keep developing your practice. Discover other ways of working.

And sometimes simply to get into a room together to move and play.

Move. Play. Connect. Develop. Discover. Belong.

Troupe membership reopens 14th of September to the 2nd of October.

Click link in bio for further details.

More soon.
