New work: Hurled Towards the Future: Lesbian Photography and Queer Imagination in 1980s London. Paul Mellon Centre/Yale University Press.

Flora Dunster (2026)

The first art-historical account of photography from London’s lesbian sex-radical scene. Hurled Towards the Future explores how lesbian photographers in late 1980s and early 1990s London worked within a climate of resistance and possibility to imagine—and create—a queer future. Focusing on the work of Tessa Boffin and Del LaGrace Volcano, this book argues that, through their photography, these artists made a critical contribution to the reclamation of “queer” as both a political identification and an aesthetic practice.

New publication announcement from @fourcornersbooks London’s Ours! Images From The Greater London Council 1981–1986.

Properly chuffed about this one + it’s always a pleasure to design for/with this publisher.

London’s Ours! Images From The Greater London Council 1981–1986
by Hazel Atashroo
Paperback, 230 pages
27 x 20 cm, over 250 image

Designed by Claire Mason
Published: 1 May 2026

About the book: After the 1981 GLC election victory, a Labour paper ran with the headline, ‘London’s Ours!’, a celebration but also a guiding principle of the GLC’s approach to tackling London’s inequality: expanding who could claim their right to the city and its resources, and who got a fair chance to succeed.

Offering an ambitious alternative to Thatcherism, GLC Leader Ken Livingstone was a thorn in the side of central government, famously taunting Westminster with a running total of unemployment figures from the roof of County Hall opposite the Houses of Parliament. This combative attitude, combined with the pioneering work of committees addressing overlooked groups – including women, ethnic minorities and gay rights – put inclusivity and social equality at the GLC’s political core.

This book documents the remarkable visual culture of the GLC, with over 250 images. Sometimes confrontational, frequently humorous, it provides a unique picture of a remarkable period in British politics and of London itself.

Budapest. Turned a corner and got ambushed by this shouty beauty. A pick and mix of styles. A ship run aground. The best thing about it is that it houses a fully breathing busy market (inside image sourced online). Lehel Market Hall, Budapest. Architect: László Rajk Jr., 2002. by @shapethepage

London’s Ours! Images From The Greater London Council 1981–1986 by Hazel Atashroo. Pulished by Four Corners Books

The GLC from 1981–86 was an experiment in local government never to be repeated. This book covers campaign material from this period. Material that is diverse in both subject matter and art direction, but united by a belief that local government could create real change through social equality, community involvement and culture. This is also a book that asserts that visual communication can be a tool for public engagement and activism, not simply promotion.

From a design perspective this book object sits somewhere between archive and activism, as although the moment in which this material was created has passed, its sense of purpose and intent still remains. It was important that the design retained something of that optimism: be direct and unpretentious, meaningful but joyous.

Presenting visual material 40 years after it was created requires particular handling, as its context has shifted from something active, street-level and public-facing to something more archival and curated. On the page, the material is both political artefact and design object. Finding the balance between those two states, between something that was once active and something now viewed historically, preoccupied me throughout the process.

Through its visual history, London’s Ours! offers a way into the political life of London at the time. For me, as a designer, it’s also a celebration of the role design once played in shaping public life.

Poster design for Compiler’s Tracing Together exhibition at the Women’s Museum. It features a grid printed on the reverse, inviting visitors to create analogue patterns which can be scanned and immediately translated and displayed on LED panels.

Showing at The Women's Museum until December 2025

The digital art collective Compiler (Tanya Boyarkina and Oscar Cass-Darweish) are currently showing Tracing Together at the Women’s Museum. Responding to the theme Desire Lines, Tracing Together combines the traditions of cross-stitch and digital pattern-making, inviting people to map their own memories and experiences into a collective textile that reveals how personal stories can be woven together to express connection.

The design was developed from the creations produced during the exhibition’s community workshops + conversations with the brilliant Tanya and Oscar of Compiler.
