“Renee Good tried to protect her neighbors because all immigrants are welcome in God’s universe. Every person is holy. Not some people, not only those people with certain paperwork, or with money, or with certain skin color, or certain sexual orientation, or the wealthy, but every single human being.”

— Beacon Director Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum (and Rabbi Emerita of Congregation Beit Simchat Torah in NYC) at the protest in Manhattan on Sunday, Jan. 11, in the wake of the terrible events in Minneapolis on Jan. 7

25 years after 9/11, a look at the true meaning of “God Bless America,” one of America’s most famous hymns, written by a Jewish immigrant.

Through the story of Irving Berlin and the renewal of Rosh Hashanah, Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum offers a moving vision of patriotism rooted not in triumphalism, but in prayer, immigration, freedom, and the possibility of a better America for all.

Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum is Senior Rabbi Emerita of Congregation Beit Simchat Torah. She shared these remarks on September 11, 2026, the first night of Rosh Hashanah. by @sharonkleinbaum

Action is the antidote for despair. It feels GOOD to get out on the streets and stand up for a democracy that lifts us all.

(If you’ve been out with us, you know exactly what we mean 💪😎🪧)

Every Thursday, we’re on the streets, sharing a vision of a better America. We invite you: Come be a beacon for democracy with us 🗽✨

And for the Jewish folks among us, Shanah Tovah! May the year and its curses end; may the new year and its blessings begin ✨ by @sharonkleinbaum

So much to say on this 25th anniversary of 9/11 and the beginning of a new year tonight with Rosh Hashanah.

We can’t possibly understand the meaning of everything that happens in our lives, but we CAN develop the muscles to respond in ways that most deeply reflect our values.

Each tradition provides meaning in this distinction and I’m so grateful to my Sikh, Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Buddhist friends who teach me how their traditions provide direction and wisdom.

If we are alive today, it is because Gd/The Holy One knows that we have something to offer, a light to provide, a micro - affection to spread. something that the world needs.

The US response to 9/11 gave us Homeland Security and ICE, the Patriot Act and other loathsome legal destructions of civil liberties. Wars that killed beyond measure, and destroyed countries. More died from the toxic clean up from 9/11 than the number who died on that day.

Antisemitism and Islamophobia was rampant and remains so. Some argue - like M Gessen — that 9/11 was America’s reichstag fire.

SO my prayer is that we each develop stronger and stronger muscles of response and resilience that reflect the deepest values of compassion, justice, solidarity, LOVE and LOVE and LOVE.

I pray that this New Year will be full of blessings and miracles, including the miracle of our resilience and non-violent values of transforming our broken world in ways and means that reflect our deepest values. I pray for help from the Holy One and with gratitude for all of you. by @sharonkleinbaum

At 106, Edith is an inspiration to us all! If she can stand up for democracy every single Thursday, so can we.

“’The world is not in good condition,’ Edith said. ‘Before, I never spoke out for anybody or anything, but now if I can, I would like to do everything I could to help them.’”

Amen! by @sharonkleinbaum
