Next week I start my residency period in West Yorkshire @yspsculpture and then at the @thearthouseuk with my RD project LANDED supported by Arts Council England, @aceagrams

LANDED considers what it is to be the custodian of land within a history of exclusion from land ownership and what it means to find a feeling of home within the rewilded natural landscape. This R&D project looks at the context of Queer space, artist’s gardens, alternative ecological projects and ‘Dyke lands’ with the aim to embed the learning into the care of To Moor the Sun @to_moor_the_sun so that it can become a sustainable project safeguarded for future generations.

LANDED consists of time spent on residency at both To Moor the Sun in West Cornwall and Yorkshire Sculpture Park and The Art House in West Yorkshire, carrying out research at the Henry Moore Institute Library, as well as carrying out visits to groups such as ‘In Our Hands’ @inourhands_org supported by Devonshire Collective @devonshirecollective in Eastbourne.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park Residency:

SHARP will undertake an open ended self directed residency with the Bothy Gallery
used as a testing ground and studio to germinate ideas whilst hosting conversations that will be recorded to create a podcast. The Bothy Gallery which was previously the
home of the head gardener at YSP will be used to experiment based on research
into connections between ‘Queer Utopia’ and the garden and reflecting on artistic
practice that connects with land and gardens. This project leads on from SHARP’s sculptural intervention in the landscape nearby to the Bothy Gallery in 2023 for the YSP exhibition On Queer Ground

The Art House Residency:

At the Art House SHARP will take the experiments and starting points made at YSP and develop the ideas through material and process using the resources at The Art House by using the photography and print facilities and ceramics studio. SHARP will
be making their own journals inspired by those of Derek Jarman which they will use to continue these conversations and document the process of creating a new Dyke land art space.

My Artist Residency time @thearthouseuk has now come to an end , what a very productive time it was. I it was fantastic to be able to spend time working in their darkroom what a great facility. It’s so much easier working within a space that is purposely built to be a darkroom. Having used make shift darkrooms for most of my life in my bathroom and with a pop up darkroom tent in my studio this was great.

I also spent time experimenting and learning new skills in the print room.
Thanks to Kirstie for all her knowledge.

Staying onsite in the artist’s apartment was lovely as well made so much more better with meeting fellow artist in residence all the way from New Zealand
@cerebralpottery and @mllyml 💜

It’s great all they do around access needs @thearthouseuk real thought as gone into it, access is very much at the forefront and not a after thought ⭐️

A week really wasn’t long another and im sure I will return in the future.

Thanks so much to @damonjacksonwaldock and all the team for all the support and @emryalls for darkroom access and photography and women’s land chats I’m sure these will continue .

🎨 INTRODUCING SHARP AT NEWLYN ART GALLERY as part of our Autumn Group Show. 🍂

@sharp_the_artist brings us ‘AWAKENING’ and ‘Lavender Menace’. Both presented currently in The Picture Room until 31 OCT🌿

🎞️ ‘AWAKENING’ is a newly produced limited-edition cassette tape, recorded live on ‘To Moor The Sun’, alongside photographs from SHARP’s ‘Lavender Menace’ series, which situates coded lesbian identity via clothing and flowers as reclaimed resistance.

SHARP is a queer working-class, socially engaged artist, activist and producer whose interdisciplinary approach moves between experimental video, photography, sculpture and sound installations. Their work is held in national public and private collections. 🖼️

Really looking forward to using the amazing facilities they have here. Print room , photographic darkroom and ceramic studio. Already settled in to the wonderful fully accessible artist studio flat and studio space. 😁 by @sharp_the_artist

what an amazing opportunity it has been to be artist in resident @yspsculpture
I arrived with ideas about what I might do but soon realised that I needed to settle into the place and slow down and let the place show me.
I walked around , did some writing and looked at the small details ,
And in doing so I started to find connections .
With Yorkshire - Cornwall my past and present and past creative ideas I have had. It took me 10 years to get from idea to creation of BEACON which was exhibited at YSP in 2022 On Queer Ground exhibition

the past is never too far away

At YSP I first worked in the bothy gallery as studio space, but later moved to The Boathouse by the water. Since arriving I had been drawn down to the lakes each day .
Swimming in the sea is something I do most days and it’s feels so calming and reassuring being by the waters edge.

I love the array of birds on the lake and the barrage of sounds.

The Boathouse opened new possibilities for me and I ended up creating a new installation in the space . Sounds I had recorded @to_moor_the_sun were played out in the space, while a recording which I filmed in the day time looking out of the window over the overgrowth,of me opening and closing the curtains onto this world were played back through the window at night. Which looked incredible and quite strange looking at myself reflected in the window as if I was there at the same time .

I looked back and caught myself looking out toward myself

This reminds me of a quote by Jeanette winterson

“I seem to have run in a great circle, and met myself again on the starting line.”

While on the residency I also recorded some conversations with @sarahc_ysp the curator at YSP and @sianyriot which will be apart of a new podcast im creating for my R&D

It was so great to have this opportunity and I thank @aceagrams for their support with the research and development grant I received.

| stand outside and see myself through the window

The Boathouse
sound and projection installation

Day time movements filmed and played back into the space in the evening.
My sound piece Awakening created as a live performance on @to_moor_the_sun played out within the space.

Filming the act of the opening of the curtains letting the light in now lets the light out

Light and memory of the day now illuminates the space at night as it travels through the window
over the overgrowth of teasel and thistles, the waves of light and sound and time.
Connect intertwine
from Cornwall to Yorkshire.

I’m really pleased how these experiments have gone within the boathouse . And it’s been such an experience to see these ideas come to life in the evening and travel over the landscape at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Working very much site - specific

I,m still here @yspsculpture on my artist residency support by @aceagrams
I was hoping to post more about my time here each day but I’ve been absorbed in the place and off socials which has been great to do for my focus. Such an amazing place to get lost in ideas .
I’ve been doing quite a bit of writing while sat in the landscape, while slowing down , listening and looking. Resting my gaze. In stillness.
What a privilege to be able to stay here by @sharp_the_artist
