Queer DYKE Artist from Bradford based in Cornwall via a 24 hour party in Manchester.
🌳 Custodian of the DYKELAND Cornwall

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This week I’ve been doing a Research and Development trip supported by @aceagrams grant. I travelled from the far west of Cornwall to the south east of England . Connecting with amazing Art , projects and people along the way.
Firstly in London I managed to get to the Tracey Emin exhibition on the last day. I ❤️ Tracey always have done and It was an intense and emotional visit. Made more so by the fact people were fainting within the space . By the impact of the work no doubt and the sheer volume of people trying to catch this exhibition. After I went into the Ana Mendieta the contrast of this being empty apart from a handful of people . This contrast was compelling and the space around the photographic work could breathe , their was a presence and energy within this work. this is the first time I’ve seen Ana Mendieta work and This work will stay with me longer than this experience.
From London I travelled on to Brighton and Eastbourne. In Eastbourne I visited VOLT @devonshirecollective and met up with their curator @pollewright who I’ve had a few zooms with so it was great to get the opportunity to meet up in person. And to see the exhibition Tessa Boffin Where We Touch The Archive. I’ve been aware of Tessa Boffin and her incredible work for quite sometime so I’m extremely proud to have been invited to be included in The Draft an archive project that is accompanying the exhibition and to see some of her archive and work and the brilliant responses by @leahmclaine and Sophie Mak-Schram . And it was also really great to see other familar faces in The Draft like @stavb . The exhibition is touring to @backlitgallery @aspexportsmouth @photoworks_uk
One of the main reasons for my RD trip was to connect @to_moor_the_sun and my practice with other land projects across the country like @inourhands_org Georjie Adams the founder was such a great host showing me and curator @pollewright around and talking about this inspiring project and the need for it. I recorded a in conversation which will be part of a new podcast im putting together during my RD time and future residency up @yspsculpture @thearthouseuk , such an inspiring trip lots to connect and think about 😁

The top prize at Exeter Contemporary Open (ECO) has been won by Yorkshire-based artist @sharp_the_artist. Their dramatic installation hanging across the entrance to the Exeter Phoenix nabbed the Overall Award worth £1000, consists of 15 pairs of Cherry Doc Marten boots. It impressed the judges with its representation of 15 damaging years of Section 28. Accepting the prize, Sharp said the piece was about “how lack of representation affected me as an artist”.

In this picture, Sharp is stood in front of an exhibition by @pegasusart “Dark Side of the Rainbow” a powerful exhibition questioning who started the Stonewall riots; blending vibrant pop art with advocacy and history. Showing at @exeterphoenixgallery walkway gallery until September 30th.

‘The Dancing Daffodils’ 1988-2024,

A photographic work by @sharp_the_artist was one of several compelling artworks I was part of selecting for the Exeter Open at @exeterphoenixgallery

Alongside fellow judge @jesfernie and under the guidance of curator @mattburrows3 Sharp was our unanimous prize winner of the Open’s award.

So impressed by their incredible commitment to representing experience of a powerfully personal and collective voice; their practice convincingly bears witness to a life lived exploring and challenging how to communicate their own presence. The work was reflecting back on itself, the passage of time reflected in creative self reflective archiving, as well as pointing to wider political challenges past and present, making, unmaking and remaking. Each scratch on the negative reprinted here a record of scars and resilience.

Congratulations to all the artists in the show, all winners, and to Matt for his brilliant presentation of a diverse body of works.

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

@sharp_the_artist describes the work:

“ This photograph was taken in 1988 while I was on a youth training scheme in Bradford. Responding to the poem by Wordsworth titled, I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud I presented this still life scene as being in motion, transforming isolation into collective movement. As a working-class queer person growing up in Bradford under Section 28, I related to this sense of loneliness within the poem.

On recently scanning the original colour film negative I saw how it had changed over time, it now holds a new beauty and has taken on additional meaning. The scratches and markings appear to me like scars telling of time, trauma and a history of repression of LGBTQIA+ people.

Daffodils used to be used as a slur against queer people, and I see this image as a celebration of queers dancing - taking that word and reclaiming it in a positive way. The Dancing Daffodils. “
