Hey Amazing Human Beings!

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

TOP SHELF is a dance film that captures the essence of my favorite part of college nights out—the thrill and joy of getting ready with friends. Inspired by those moments full of laughter, music, and the excitement of choosing just the right outfit, this film embodies that shared anticipation. On the top shelf of my closet, there’s a bin packed with party tops, each one holding memories of past nights and shared adventures. This film is a celebration of friendship, self-expression, and the ritual that turns getting ready into the highlight of the night. I hope you feel the joy and connection that inspired TOP SHELF.

Been meaning to post these beautiful dancers, but life has been non-stop with shows, rehearsals, and family. On my one day off, I’m reminded of how lucky I am to create art with such incredible humans. Thank you guys so much for trusting me with this process and accepting vulnerability to someone new.

Before We Knew the Difference…
Choreography: Tala Shay
Dancers: @_whirleybird_ and @maysonwatsondance

This project I was assigned to do associative research on anything I wanted and to create and compose my own song score. Initially, I wanted to research about the growth of maturity people have as they grow up and essentially lose their innocence. So I compiled old videos and audio of my sister and our family through our childhood.

However, as I began to make the score mine initial prompt began to gradually change. I decided to research about me and my sister and our relationship with the part of our identity that we do not know and the unknowing pressures of it. Slowly it developed into how we discovered we are different.

I will leave this post with some texts of my essay I wrote on it.

“I was never the type of girl that ever stopped and stared at myself and looked at my face for longer than 30 seconds. Mainly because as a kid I did not like my smile. However, one time a relative told me I had the eyes of my donor. Since then, I occasionally find myself invested in how my eyes look. To this day this is the only thing I have ever seen from my donor. Therefore, I occasionally look in the mirror…

When you are a child, you are usually ignorant of other people’s differences but not necessarily in a negative way, rather in an innocent light. For the longest time, my sister and I did not get why it was so hard for other people to understand how my family dynamic worked or why we were conceived this way. As we got older, and the more people asked the more confused we got too. Slowly until one distinct day I began to question everything myself... So as our innocence turned into maturity, we began to grieve something we never had, something we might never will.”

If you get to the end of this post congratulations. You have learned about something that is very special to my identity and the relationships I choose to have. This piece and these dancers will always hold a special place in my heart. They created something beautiful out of something I didn’t know I needed.

I had a wonderful opportunity to dance in several junior comps this semester! Within each piece, I learned so much about myself and my peers! I am thankful for every experience and artist I have been exposed to and am so excited to begin my comp journey this upcoming semester with inspiration from the pieces I have witnessed and danced in! :)

Fun fact, a football hit my face about an hour before this showing. 😭🏈😭 Yes you read that right, a football. No one new at the time that I was having the most horrible muscle spasms in my neck and back. Thank you @emma_muncie for trusting me in this piece. I love working with you and hope I get to again in the future! #professionaldancer #doesanyonehavetigerbalm #whothrowsafootballatacrosswalk? by @shayinmotion_

Reminiscing over this amazing solo that I had the honor of doing. I never got a recording of if but here is a (very ruff and unedited 😅) rehearsal video. @channingdaytonchoreo thank you for this! I loved your energy and creativity and am so excited for this upcoming school season. I still have a lot to learn but looking back from even this rehearsal video I have seen so much growth in myself. by @shayinmotion_
