I am incredibly honoured to announce that I have been awarded a grant from @canada.council

Born out of the dissonance between creativity, capitalism, and identity, this collection explores how society often reduces human worth to productivity, labels, and social status, particularly for those pushed to its margins.

A huge honor to @dearfutureyeg and @audreysbooks for helping bring the release party to life!

Join us October 22nd at 7 PM for poetry readings, keynote speakers, a book signing, and some yummy food! 🤭

The late nights, missed buses to open mics, and classes skipped to write (don’t recommend that last one 😭) have all led here. Having my work recognized nationally means more than words can express.

So grateful to be supported alongside incredible Canadian artists. And this is only the beginning.

See you on the 22nd 😉, and more…

Meet the Poets of the night at The Myrrha Room Black History Month Celebration.

Shemi Ajibola is a Nigerian-Canadian poet whose work lives in the in-between. Raised between Nigeria and Canada, his poetry explores duality, grief, love, and the quiet realization that everyone around us is carrying an entire world of their own. Influenced by voices like Maya Angelou, Nina Simone, Nikki Giovanni, and Gil Scott-Heron, his writing is rhythmic, honest, and deeply human. For Shemi, poetry is a way of learning himself in real time and living many lives inside one. @sheaji_

Madulla Shakib is a Somali-Canadian multidisciplinary creative blending spoken-word, acting, and film to tell stories rooted in truth, pain, and memory. His work explores grief, faith, resilience, and the moments that shape who we become, using silence and presence as powerfully as words. Each piece is part of a larger journey: turning pain into purpose and moments into meaning. @madullaa

Changing the game through visual art and poetry.

An experience you won’t forget.

“Growing up in Nigeria for 12 years, Canada and North America always felt like some exclusive club I couldn’t crash. I Spent too many hours frying my eyes on Western YouTubers, so by the time I hit 13, slipping into the “Canadian” thing felt like clockwork. I thought I’d scrubbed off the “abomination” I tagged to being an African boy. Fast forward, and now, through my art and poetry, I’ve never felt hungrier for my real home. This whole immigrant “soft life” obsession is bullshit. It’s this inferiority complex that ate at me till high school. By the time I was 16, It was obvious I was playing on the wrong saved game file. Between the usual teenage crap and trying to “fit in” with the Lululemons and tacky-ass Zoo York hoodies, it just didn’t feel like me. Canadian society’s got this twisted way of clocking immigrant kids’ insecurities, and when you try flipping the script, they act all offended. I remember ditching those rubber-cuffed cargo pants for some skater corduroys and rocking sleeveless sweater vests. Not my best look, but I didn’t give a shit. I took the bullying head-on and threw a big “fuck you” right back at anyone throwing it at me. At 18 I’ve written my own book, Owned my own brands, directed numerous creative shoots, and continue to expand my crafts in Alberta of all places Most importantly I’m the most comfortable within my masculinity and heritage that I have ever been.”
