Two nights celebrating Chad.

Man.. At least for me.. I hate when im asked to pick a favorite of something I’m passionate about.. in absolutes..

Band. Movie. Potato. You get it.

It’s insane.. like, give me 200 subgenres like an award show.. I’ll talk to you for days.

Top five? Fine. Top five is fair-ish.

And since the late 1900s, my top five-ish
 let’s say top seven
 has stayed remarkably consistent.

But a long time ago, it became clear that although two through seven might be hard to put in any real order, number one was easy..

A New Found Glory.

I still remember (allegedly) downloading Napster packs on my dad’s work computer. and Relax.. I was a child and Lars hadn’t told us it was stealing yet..

Believe it or not.. people pirating music on the internet didn’t always have the best organizational skills.

I don’t remember exactly what I was even trying to download. I think Americana..

What I do know is there were three songs in that pack that were not supposed to be there:

Broken Sound. Hit or Miss. The Goodbye Song.

Brother.. I played the absolute shit out of them.

A couple years later, I was lucky enough to see Blink for the TOYP&J tour. New Found Glory opened for them.

That was it man.. origin story complete.. hooked.

I could roughly put a number on how many times I’ve seen them since. But honestly, even if I divided it by 12, I think it would still sound like a flex..

But that’s kind of my point.

I don’t think that number says nearly as much about me as it does about them.

I’ve watched them play as dots from the lawn and been so lucky to watch them play a rooms of 20. For the fans.

Over and over, year after year, they never stopped feeling like our band.

On September 20, after years of fighting cancer, we lost Chad Gilbert.

Chadball.

New Found Glory’s lifelong grizzly of a guitarist and hypester.

Eight days later, NFG was scheduled to play six sets over two nights at EPCOT.

Chad had already chosen all six setlists before his passing..

So the fellas came, brought a little help, and killed it.

I feel incredibly lucky.. the Art Ive loved the most, ended up, loving me back.

Rest well, Chad.

Some stills of this. No Stains / No Dyes.

Walnut in walnut. Maple in maple. Cherry in cherry. Leopard wood for the shirt, with a separate patch cut for the collar to exaggerate the grain. For the cherry, i tried to cut pieces with no visible grain to drop into that super active cathedral.

Punched part of the hair through the side of the live edge and left the oxidation.. gave it an interesting effect. The other three edges were sanded clean.

I never get tired of it. The colors are cool but, it’s always the grain for me. moves, shifts, mutates. Feels like a Rorschach test half the time. There’s always something in there. ..species from almost every shade.. then on top of that.. it’s like, “oh hey!.. beetles, fungus, minerals, puddles.. etc.. come make things weirder.“ and stress!? if that tree had a rough life, great chance it’s gonna be gorgeous. probably a metaphor in there.

No real plan. Just kept pulling scraps out of the pile to figure out the next feature. It was fun.

AyJay & Westley’s guest library. 📚🎉

Contrasting bride and groom bookshelves built for a wedding reception.

The books with guests’ names on the spines acted as seating chart markers, showing which table each group was seated at.

The cabinets are built from oak and birch, with African mahogany used for the tops, shelves, feet, and trim. Each shelf features the couple’s combined initials, engraved and mirrored to follow the arch. AyJay’s “A” leading on hers, Westley’s “W” on his.

Designed for their day, built to last for as long as they’d like.. This was another fun one, always thrilled to be able to contribute something of value to someone else’s story. Super thankful for the opportunity. taken in Bella Cosa Weddings by @sheamade

Live edge black walnut chopping slab.

The main crack is stabilized with 14 overlapping inlays that give it a stitched look. Underneath, I carved in some texture before adding and sanding the logo flush. I’ve done inlay and acrylic backfill with texture on top before, which I love, but this time I wanted to try something different.

I was curious how it would look to carve a textured surface with a recessed pocket, leave the pocket empty, and sand it flush so the grain still came through. I used my logo to test the idea. Bigger than I’d usually go, but I wanted to take up the whole hardwood surface to see how the effect played out.

The feet are oblong cuts from the heart and sap line. I turned the sapwood sides inward so they’d blend in from the side and give it a floating look. Each foot is a different size, inlaid to follow the angled ends of the slab, which I only cleaned up slightly from how it was originally rough cut.

The stitch inlays get thinner toward the center, with half laps at each joint, not that it matters. None of this matters. The glue would’ve done the job. The crack might’ve been fine. 😅 Just thought it was a fun experiment I’d love to blow up later.

That’s about it. Thanks for checking it out!

Detroit Lions Tribute Pieces

Crafted out of stripped black walnut, ambrosia maple, and cherry—with gorgeous streaks of pink. Today was the day Cherry upstaged her North American siblings.

With creative freedom, I originally planned to pair each backer with a contrasting hardwood, but I kept going back and forth on which combo I liked best. Eventually landed on keeping each species together, but thought it was a fun concept to make them magnetically float on center, allowing each lion to be easily removed and swapped. That way, the final design is left up to their new owners

Commissioned for a fellow Michigander transplanted to the Sunshine State and his two adult sons.

A Star Wars love story.

Brandon reached out to commission a piece to celebrate his and Melissa’s first wedding anniversary, and once I heard their story, the design practically wrote itself.

Two Texans meet while working at Walt Disney World. They fall in love in Florida. Get married on May the 4th in Savannah, Georgia. Then jet off for a honeymoon safari in Kenya.

When we first spoke, Brandon mentioned wanting to incorporate their saved acrylic wedding table marker names somehow—maybe through inlays. Each of the six tables had been named after a meaningful place: Texas, Disney, Kenya, and three planets from Star Wars lore—a subtle nod to their May the 4th wedding. That idea sparked something bigger. I started thinking about how their table marker text could become visual, telling their story through inlaid places: where they grew up in Texas, where they met in Florida, where they married in Georgia, and where they honeymooned in Kenya. Each place represents a chapter of their story. And with Star Wars woven into their celebration, I couldn’t resist sneaking in a little galactic touch.

The final piece features thirteen layered hardwood inlays, with the six wedding table markers trimmed down and inlaid into the back.

One of my favorite things in life is good writing—a good story. And this piece quickly became one of my personal favorites. The color combos, the grain flow, the symbolism
I was just really happy with how it all came together.

If you’ve got a moment, take a second to appreciate the direction of the grain and the depth of the layers. A lot of love went into this one.

May the 4th be with Brandon, Melissa, and all of you.

Some stills of this Modest Mouse prep tray carved from hornbeam with acrylic. Cherry and a small bit of Bloodwood are inlaid on the back. Little bit of burnt in texture used on the matchstick inlay.

First time working with hornbeam, it’s beautiful but wasn’t a blast to work with. Fun lil project overall, really digging the shape.

Believe.

I’m trying to do better about posting finished stills. Here are a few from the pair of lasso boards I made a while back.

They’re made of African teak with yellowheart and hard maple inlays, along with black and blue acrylics.

One of the boards had a pretty good crack running along the backside. I repaired it by adding a handful of bow ties cut from the same boards scrap.

A walnut ghost.

Always thought cathedral grain looked like a little grain ghosts, so I figured I’d lean into it. Made a little guy out of walnut board with a bunch of different walnuts inlays. Tried to move the grain direction around to help with the drawing and give it some character. Little bit of contrast on the back with a maple ghost inlaid into the rough sawn side of the board.

If you can read his sign you’re probably a ghost. taken in Clermont, Florida by @sheamade
