Brandon Sheats (@sheatsb) is a critic, editor and publisher whose work is a constant reminder for us at Critical Minded that the South has something to say. In our conversation during the Art Papers Symposium in Atlanta in 2025, Brandon shares about the role that Critical Minded plays in fortifying the mental and spiritual strength needed for Black, Southern and other marginalized writers to stay engaged in this field of cultural work.

Brandon is the publisher of Burnaway, an experiment that happens to look like an art magazine. Their mission is to support Southern and Caribbean artists with critical writing, mentorship, gatherings and more. While Brandon is one of the founding publishers of the @regionalartpublishers collective, his work with Burnaway offers a beacon that will continue to illuminate the global cultural impact of the South and Caribbean. Head to @burnaway to read and support the latest in arts and culture coming from the Southern and Caribbean regions.

We are proud to count Brandon as part of our community. Listen to him and other arts writers part of our Not for Sale Interview series at the #linkinbio. by @sheatsb

Surround yourself with good people they said, people that inspire you, move you, make you better. Put yourself in situations you can grow in, spaces you can roam in, and don’t look back.

Here’s to those folks in 2024. by @sheatsb

Proofs of life/feeding the algo.

If anyone told me that I’d be doing this much in the past three months, I’d shrug and say “could go worse”.

Some feelings ensued, some business was done, began learning to work smarter not harder, my cousins taught me some new game that’s like roulette except it’s money or booze, and a dang dog got my attention.

All in all, not bad. taken in Everywhere by @sheatsb

“Sometimes people try to destroy you, precisely because they recognize your power - not because they don't see it, but because they see it and they don't want it to exist.”

This loss is devastating to say the least. I keep looking for and at words and have nothing but love, gratitude, and adoration for being able to exist at the same time as her. She just taught us so much about ourselves and our capacity to love and be loved, to not rely on colonial patriarchy as masculinity. It informs every try I make in my work. This one hurts.
