Do you know who banned books?đŸ€”
Hitler.
Do you know why?đŸ€”
Because he didn’t want his citizens having access to opinions, beliefs and information that contradicted his views. He needed them to stay uneducated and ignorant so he could brainwash them.😒
Next time you think a book ban is good for your family, your religion, or your children, remember they ban the books they think will encourage you to think critically. They ban the books that might increase your empathy for your fellow human beings. They ban the books that educate.
They want to keep your critical thinking dead. And they want to keep your empathy dead too. Because if you learn about your fellow humanity’s experiences and feel sympathy or empathy, you might start questioning the status quo.

No one is forcing anyone to read a book they don’t like. In the same way, no one can force their distaste for a book on others.

Banning books is unconstitutional. The written word is protected by free speech.

Protect our public libraries.
Protect our public schools.
Protect our public discourse.
Support local bookstores.

In the last ten years or so, the use of social media has aided in deepening the divide of our nation. Algorithms on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram keep track of what a user clicks on, and from then on, that user ONLY sees videos and posts that reaffirm that user’s beliefs and opinions. The cycle deepens by the re-sharing of the content that the user agrees with and the algorithm continues to show the user ONLY what the user has continually affirmed they want to see. Many people do not realize this aspect of social media and they do not understand that they have basically become pawns in furthering the political and social divides of our nation and world. Those divisions ONLY benefit politicians and those in power.
This is called an echo chamber: when a person’s beliefs are the only thing they see, hear, read or experience. Anytime an outside perspective is shown to them, they quickly go to the resources provided in the echo chamber to reaffirm and double down on their opinions.
Just remember, those in power benefit from us being divided. They are the “talking heads” that tell you that the “other side” is evil and stupid. Every time you choose to believe a politician, “news” pundit or corporate executive over your fellow citizens, you’re giving away your power. Truly, knowledge is power and staying ignorant, is how we stay divided and angry with each other. taken in Statue of Liberty National Monument by @shellanor_roosevelt

I want to explain something about sociology and sociologists.
When you hear experts in the social sciences, they are making observations about human behavior. They have done the work. They have put in the hours (years) to observe and research hundreds, if not thousands, of people whom they want to learn about.
They have observed a LOT of people before they share their knowledge, observations and ideas. They are the literal experts in social patterns, interactions, institutions, and systems.

You, as an individual, are making observations based on your experience. You are making assumptions based on what you watch on TV or social media, and seeing your friends’ posts and comments.
Sociologists are observing EVERYONE and commenting on those observations.
Please remember that these people are speaking from years of education, research, studies, etc. And because all you have to go on is your world, your friends, your family, maybe consider that sociologists know more than you about systemic problems, institutions created by people, etc.

Sociologists speak in terms of social/systemic/structural patterns, themes and observations. People don’t understand this, and try to argue that their personal experience is different. But your personal experience doesn’t negate the clear and obvious patterns happening on a large scale.

We all react to what people say or observe based on our own biases, motivations, opinions and feelings. I’m here to remind us that sociologists and other experts in the social sciences know what they are talking about. Acknowledging the depth of their wisdom, knowledge, observations and research would help us all be more empathetic and less defensive about things we know little, to nothing, about.

New evening walk spot. I didn’t realize the public school track/property was available for the public to use in the evenings. It’s been lovely seeing people walk, use the basketball court, and play with their dogs in this space.
Summer evenings are why I’m hesitant to welcome in Fall. by @shellanor_roosevelt

The Headwaters of the Colorado River, which is the main water source for 40 million people across 7 states. Due to the lack of snow this last winter, the river and reservoir levels across the state have been at record lows. The week we were visiting my cousin, she said reservoirs across Northern Colorado were just ordered to release water into the Colorado River

So local reservoirs emptied into this river so that Arizona, Nevada and California (which use the largest share of the water) would have more waterâ€ŠđŸ€” taken in Colorado by @shellanor_roosevelt
