I @alicekettle continue my takeover of the Paintworks account, and I am giving a focus to those who use textile or relate related approaches/thinking in their artistic work. The artists today move material from 2 to 3 dimensions, as time travellers, they move between the space and time. Some were included in the exhibition title SOFT POWER @rwabristol in 2025, which I co-curated with @lesleymilar4

Shelly Goldsmith @shellytippingoldsmith · United Kingdom

Shelly Goldsmith and I have worked alongside each other both as artists and academics. She uses cloth as a carrier of memory, identity and lived experience.

She is an expert tapestry weaver which she brings into her work alongside a variety of other approaches which include stitching, photography and reclaimed textiles. Her subjects are personal histories which interweave with questioning narratives of identity. Her recent exhibition weaver in Margate revisited family, memory and the complex intergenerational relationship between mother and daughter. She exhibited her work in the SOFT POWER exhibition @rwabristol which I co-curated with @lesleymillar4

Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in collections including the V&A and The Whitworth.

A closer look at Mother’s Last Dress (2026), long-listed for the Kate Derum Award for Tapestries @austapestry.

This small tapestry considers the powerful and complex relationship we have with our mothers and the imprint that relationship leaves behind.

The tapestry depicts a lump of coal with a belt wrapped around it. It's woven in part from repurposed thread taken from my late mother’s poly-cotton hospital gown, un-ravelled and rewoven.

I travelled to a coal mine in Wales to choose a large piece of anthracite coal, which I have been drawing and weaving from. I’m fascinated by the substance of coal, evidence of what came before us, compressed life on earth from a time we can only imagine.

The small tapestry is woven on a circular warp around a frame, the whole textile is slipped off the frame intact. The warp threads are left uncut, one continuous thread which travels through the core of the weaving.

Very happy to see this piece recognised as part of the award and in such good company! ✨

What a wonderful few days it’s been.

A huge thank you to everyone who has come to see weaver so far, and to everyone who joined us for drinks on Saturday. It was very special to see the gallery so full and to have so many conversations around the work.

Thank you for all the thoughtful responses, questions and support. It means a great deal to me.

There’s still a little time to visit if you haven’t made it yet. weaver is open tomorrow for its final day, closing at 2pm on Tuesday 22 September.

Thank you for making these few days of weaver so special.

Some very exciting news to share!

I’m delighted to have been long-listed/shortlisted for two awards with two different pieces of work.

A Cloud Is Forming has been long-listed for The Artist’s Prize, a new open art prize co-founded by @zealous_co and @firstsitecolchester. The longlist brings together 200 artists, with a shortlist of 20 to be announced in November.

And Mother’s Last Dress is a finalist in the Kate Derum Award for Tapestries @austapestry, celebrating contemporary hand-woven tapestry from around the world.

I’m incredibly happy to see these two works recognised in this way 💫

Bringing Princess Pyramid to Margate gives me an opportunity to return to the work and see it in a new context.

Weaving gives me a particular kind of space and time to think. As I work, I find myself returning to scenarios and situations, interrogating ideas and allowing my understanding of them to shift.

Alongside Princess Pyramid, the exhibition will bring together smaller works and working drawings.

The drawings give me a way to explore ideas as they come, putting thoughts down on paper and seeing where they lead.

I’m interested in how bringing these works together might create new interpretations.

That process will continue in the gallery.

weaver opens this Thursday 17 September.

See you there!

Thank you KUNO II 2026 for inviting me to contribute, it was such a pleasure to work with you !
Nordplus KUNO network brought together students and staff from various art schools across the Nordic and Baltic countries.
This year the Textile Futures theme was tapestry and I set the scene in two lectures. Really looking forward to seeing some of the outcomes. Special thank you to @timparry_williams_projects, @kristin_tinsa_saeterdal Prof. Krista Leesi, Prof.Emma Linde, Prof. Monika Žaltauskaitė-Grašienė, Prof. Lina Koseleva. - images: thanks @christinaforrer and @vamuseum for the opening images ❤️ by @shellytippingoldsmith

Something else I’ve been making for weaver…

I’ve taken fragments of Princess Pyramid, printed them onto cloth and hand-sewn them into bags.

A very limited number of finished bags will be available to buy at the gallery next week.

And for those who can’t make it to Margate (or simply like making things themselves), I’ve also put together kits so you can sew your own.

The kits are available through my website now. Be quick as this is a limited edition, each bag is signed and numbered.

The recycled polyester bags are hand printed using digital dye sublimation at UCA Epsom - thank you @unicreativearts.

Tapestry is an ancient and slow process. Each section is built up by hand, thread by thread. Digital textile printing, by contrast, allows me to take a photographic image and reproduce it directly onto cloth at a scale that would not otherwise be possible.

In Princess Pyramid, these two very different ways of making sit alongside one another: the speed and precision of digital technology against the slowness and physicality of the hand-woven tapestry.

I’m interested in what happens when these processes meet and when something produced almost instantly becomes the surface for something made slowly, by hand. Bringing these processes together creates a space where past and present can sit alongside one another.

In Princess Pyramid, the hand-woven tapestry sits directly in front of the enlarged family photograph. For me, that gesture creates a kind of conversation between the image I inherited and something I am making now.

The weaving interrupts the photograph. It covers some figures while leaving others visible, changing where the eye is drawn and how the original image can be read.

I’m not trying to rewrite the photograph or arrive at a fixed interpretation of it. The act of weaving gives me a way to return to it, to look again, and to make space for thoughts and questions that have changed over time.

The conversation happens in that space between the two: between photograph and tapestry, past and present, what is visible and what is concealed.

I’ve been exploring digital textile printing as another way of bringing photography and cloth together in my practice. It’s a process I’ve returned to recently, working with images at a much larger scale and considering what changes when a photograph moves from one material surface to another.

For Princess Pyramid, I used an archival family photograph taken on 35mm transparency (colour slide) by my father in the late 1960s. Enlarged to 2.5 × 3 metres, the image is printed onto recycled polyester using digital dye-sublimation.

Printing the photograph onto cloth gives the image a different material presence. It takes on the texture of woven fabric, allowing photography and the hand-woven tapestry that intervenes upon it to speak the same material language.

At the heart of my upcoming exhibition, weaver, is one central work: Princess Pyramid.

It began with a family photograph taken by my father in the late 1960s.

Taken in our living room, it shows four generations of women in my family, forming a kind of pyramid with my mother at the apex and me as a child at the edge of the frame.

Like so many family photographs, it holds more than the moment it captures: relationships, memories and histories that shift as we look back at them from a distance.

For this installation, I enlarged the photograph and printed it onto cloth, before intervening in the image with hand-woven tapestry. The female figures are gradually covered by the weave, while my mother and I remain visible.

Through this process of concealing and revealing, I return to the photograph and the relationships it holds, altering how the image can be read to open up a new conversation.
