I @alicekettle continue my takeover of the Paintworks account, and I am giving a focus to those who use textile or relate related approaches/thinking in their artistic work. The artists today move material from 2 to 3 dimensions, as time travellers, they move between the space and time. Some were included in the exhibition title SOFT POWER @rwabristol in 2025, which I co-curated with @lesleymilar4

Shelly Goldsmith and I have worked alongside each other both as artists and academics. She uses cloth as a carrier of memory, identity and lived experience.

She is an expert tapestry weaver which she brings into her work alongside a variety of other approaches which include stitching, photography and reclaimed textiles. Her subjects are personal histories which interweave with questioning narratives of identity. Her recent exhibition weaver in Margate revisited family, memory and the complex intergenerational relationship between mother and daughter. She exhibited her work in the SOFT POWER exhibition @rwabristol which I co-curated with @lesleymillar4

Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in collections including the V&A and The Whitworth.

‘Cloth can hold conversations that words cannot.

Rather than treating the past as something fixed or complete, Goldsmith’s work embraces conversation as an ongoing practice, one that invites viewers to consider what making can hold when words alone are no longer enough.

Ancient weaving traditions are brought into dialogue with contemporary textile technologies and photography, where making itself becomes a form of thinking and a way to embrace conversation as an ongoing practice.’

I love Shelly’s work and my photos don’t show how amazing it is…

The exhibition is at Projects Kavel Rafferty, Margate, Thursday 17th to Tuesday 22nd September 2026.

Jeanette, 2026
From Stepmothers

I met @nettysylvester through @shellytippingoldsmith and went to her home in Ramsgate to make a painting from some drawings.

I ended up finishing the drawing instead as I liked it as it was.

I wanted to portray something strong and stoic in Jeanette. She’s actually much more smiley and, I suspect, much softer than this portrait. But there was something about this version of her that I wanted to hold onto.

We talked about her four boys, two of them stepchildren, teaching school children, and family life. We looked at her collage work in the studio and drank tea.

Some of her friends came to the show. A few said they had never thought of Jeanette as a stepmother.

I found that really interesting. Sometimes the things that define us aren’t necessarily the things other people notice.

This thank you will never be big enough ...

As our Arts Council England @aceagrams project draws to a close, I want to shine a spotlight on the irreplaceable, highly skilled and big-hearted team of freelancers, creative practitioners, volunteers and technicians who helped bring the ‘Mind to Stitch’ project to life over the last two years.

Together, we reached more than 17,000 people through workshops, talks, WIP shows and the end-of-project exhibition @the_beaney - where visitors left more than 500 messages on a fabric wall of giant sequins. But the impact of this project goes far beyond numbers.

The project's ‘Mind to Stitch’ workshops and ‘My Hands Are My Voice’ exhibition were made possible by something deeper than skills, time and labour alone. The encouragement, care and belief of this team (not all pictured here) helped carry both the project - and me - through its many twists and turns. They became a kind of human scaffolding, holding everything together so we could build, share and grow the vision.

And at home, the support of my partner @michaelsonofmichael has been beyond measure ...

With this second creative health project - a scale-up from my first funded With & Without Diana project - Diana's artworks and story have continued to touch people in ways I could never have imagined when I first began uncovering it all six years ago ...

As my little sister Rosie wrote on the gallery feedback wall: "It was all meant to be."

A belated thank you to all the lovely folk who joined us for the closing 'In Conversation' event of 𝙈𝙮 𝙃𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝘼𝙧𝙚 𝙈𝙮 𝙑𝙤𝙞𝙘𝙚 exhibition on 17 May.

This sold-out talk @the_beaney felt like a joyful yet poignant celebration of the exhibition’s eight-week run, the 51 Mind to Stitch workshops held in 2025–26 - and my late mother Diana Francis, whose story and artwork inspired it all.

A special thank you to the event's host, textile artist @shellytippingoldsmith, and to writer and researcher @cwellesleysmith, who brought her personal experience of textile-based social practice and her extraordinary 10-metre-long Stitch Journal (2013–23) to the conversation. Claire generously shared this inspiring piece with everyone at the end of the talk.

It was a real pleasure to talk with Claire and Shelly about the story behind With & Without Diana; the role of stitching in grief, care and connection; and the ways textiles can support expression, wellbeing and community (although we could have done with another hundred hours to properly unpick all these themes at the seams!)

I also had the opportunity to read Mending A Better Ending, a piece of text I wrote last year for the launch of @alexia.marmara 's @amurmur project and for a forthcoming textile publication by @cwellesleysmith. Reading such personal words aloud was challenging but powerful. I feel fortunate to have a voice and privileged to be able to share my story.

And finally, thank you to exhibition producer and impromptu project partner @folioatelier @mariedoinne , who went above and beyond to make sure the event ran so smoothly.

Inspirational Monday is details of the superb exhibition A Stitch in Time which is showing at the Paul Smith Space in London.

Curated by @ktheller it features textile art by 12 artists using a range of techniques including hand and machine embroidery, loom weaving, tapestry weaving and more. Three artists are featured in my book @ceciliacharlton @ptolemymann.art and @alicekettle and there is one of the best tapestries I've ever seen, woven by @shellytippingoldsmith Other artists shown here include @carolina_mazzolari_studio @sanderson_ben @laetitziacampbell @hchontos @tiffanie.delune and Alice von Maltzahn @kimathimafafo are @janebustin are also showing incredible work.

It is a free exhibition but be quick it ends on May 31st - Paul Smith Space, 9 Albermarle St, London, W1S 4BL.

On Sunday 17th May, join Rachelle Francis and Dr Claire Wellesley-Smith for a conversation on making, memory and wellbeing, hosted by textile artist Shelly Goldsmith.

This conversation will bring together personal story and creative practice, revealing the therapeutic power of stitching to connect us to ourselves - and to each other.

Rachelle will share the personal story behind her exhibition, My Hands Are My Voice, which brings her work into dialogue with that of her late mother Diana.

Claire will reflect on her acclaimed 'Stitch Journal' (2013-23), a daily reflective stitching practice created over a decade. This piece was made alongside her working life in community-based socially engaged textile practice and projects that connect arts, health and heritage.

Rachelle Francis is a textile artist whose practice spans fashion embroidery, textile art and social practice. After an eighteen-year career designing embroideries for couture brands, the uncovering of Diana’s artworks prompted a shift in focus towards participatory and socially engaged work.

Dr Claire Wellesley‑Smith’s work sits at the intersection of textiles, heritage, creative health and research. She is the author of Slow Stitch: Mindful and Contemplative Textile Art (2015) and Resilient Stitch: Wellbeing and Connection in Textile Art (2021), both published by Batsford.
