“During the era of mid-eighties shoulder-pad soul Freddie Jackson was the Quiet Storm King and staple on R&B radio. In an era defined by Jeffrey Osborne, Glenn Jones and Peabo Bryson’s genteel balladry and Alexander O’Neal’s seductive virility and Teddy Pendergrass’s Adult Contemporary comeback, Jackson stood tall even withstanding Luther Vandross’s mighty run by racking up 7 consecutive #1 singles (3 others made it to #2) between 1985-1991. His second album (Just Like The First Time)was a mini-greatest hits package. Long after the hits cooled audiences still flocked to venues to see Jackson deliver his percussive catalog with his trademark Uptown cool. “ by @sheltayl1968

Only three days into Black Music Month, five bricks in our mighty musical mortar have fallen including Peabo Bryson. Alongside Teddy Pendergrass, Bryson was part of a second wave of R&B solo male vocalists following on the heels of early/mid 70s soul men Issac Hayes, Al Green, Barry White and Bobby Womack. The antithesis of Teddy’s quiet fire and ferocious virility—-Bryson carved out his own lane delivering ballads with a soaring vocal gentility and devotion, inspiring his label Capitol Records to brand him as “the Gentleman of Soul.” Alongside TP, Bryson’s popularity and commercial viability would help pave the way for Luther Vandross, Freddie Jackson, Alexander O’ Neal, Jeffrey Osborne, Lionel Richie, Glen Jones and Keith Washington. Way before Atlanta trap rap and contemporary R&B explosion, Bryson was ATL’s seminal R&B king reigning supreme in a luxurious high rise condo overlooking the city. More than a silky soul man Bryson would also become an adult contemporary cornerstone delivering hits deep into the 1990s while remaining permanent fixture in music until his transition. He was a class act who exemplified the best of Black Music. by @sheltayl1968

Beyoncé and Chris Brown’s legacy-in-progress will go down in history, but Michael Jackson’s impactful reach across multiple generations ensures he’ll forever remain in a state of perpetual discovery. Current and future artists may manipulate entertainment and music media to advance their careers. One day, Jackson’s sales numbers may be eclipsed. In this moment, Beyoncé and Chris Brown’s luminosity are undoubtedly worthy of celebration but their road to immortality will forever be marked by signposts of Jackson’s infinite influence. by @sheltayl1968

Running errands up in Maryland and stopped to eat. By chance I happened to be a couple blocks from Palmer Park where @sugarrayleonard used to live before his glory pro boxing days. As a kid reading up on Ray, I always wonder where it was. Moments like these are just as memorable as a vacation island hop! Salute Ray! by @sheltayl1968
