Why does living a "full life" feel so empty?

We keep adding projects, activities, stuff, and commitments until our attention is scattered across all of them.

By the time we realize our cup is overflowing, saying "no" or letting something go feels wrong, even when we know we need to.

I’m spending 2 years with the Tao Te Ching, one verse a week, and how I bring each verse into daily life - simply because I want to let each word nourish me, to savor the drink of life.

This intention brings me back to something as simple as a cup of tea.

The people who cultivated the leaves, the sun, the earth, the water, the air all contributed to what’s sitting in my hand. So much had to come together for something I can drink without a second thought.

Getting back to simplicity in modernity is hard because it means stepping away from something we’ve committed to. But space is what allows us to appreciate the things we’ve chosen to keep.

Before adding another thing to your life, ask yourself: do I have room to enjoy what’s already here?

Join my Tao Te Ching journey through the link in my bio.

In the meantime, enjoy the tea you’ve already poured, my friends 🍵

I’m spending two years on one book.

As insane as it sounds, the Tao Te Ching is one of the most important books you can absorb in today’s chaotic, increasingly automated world, where a single aligned action, well timed, is much more productive than a thousand hours of pure grind.

Its principles of natural action, effortless living, and grounded contrarianism serve as a hedge against modern hustle culture, which seeks to extract every ounce of our limited time and energy in the name of productivity and performance.

Somewhere along the way, we can lose the presence to actually enjoy the life we’re working so hard to build.

The Tao Te Ching helps me work through these questions:

How do you recognize when you’re forcing something?

How do you return to what matters to you?

When you feel trapped between pushing harder and giving up, what other possibilities have you stopped seeing?

That’s why I’m spending two years on this one book, sharing my deep dives along the way.

In this series, I show you how I work through the book: the annotations, the passages I struggle with, and how I bring each verse into daily life.

You can follow the same process and explore what it means for the decisions you’re facing.

One verse a week gives us time to actually try living what we’ve read, letting it become part of us and alchemize into wisdom - rather than cramming more information into our already overloaded minds.

Join me through the link in my bio. Brew some tea, my friends 🍵

I just spent 7 hours translating one verse of the Tao Te Ching.

The "Integrity" Verse #13.

And today I want to share not only the insights, but exactly how I went through the translation process, so you can use the same approach whenever you run into a verse that eludes understanding.

I did the whole thing with nothing more than a traveler’s notebook, two erasable pens, and ChatGPT.

This was actually my first time translating something like this, and my Chinese honestly sucks. Think 1st grader taking on Shakespeare 😂

I had to slow down and go character by character, break each one apart, understand what it meant, and then figure out how the whole line fit together.

By the end, I’d built a simple translation system that I think a beginner could actually use.

Full tutorial in my bio link.

Most of the time, you don’t see the spiderweb. You see what it catches.

It's a pretty good metaphor for modern life.

We notice the visible outcomes: money, followers, titles, achievements, bodies, finished work. The prey sitting at the center of the web.

What we miss are the quieter things that made those outcomes possible in the first place: trust built over years, health, environment, solitude, accumulated skill, the people who keep showing up, the empty space where an idea can emerge.

The Tao Te Ching draws our attention back toward these less visible forces. Emptiness. Stillness. Softness. The low places. The things that don’t announce themselves, but quietly make everything else work.

And as one of my Sunday meetup attendees noted:

"When their web is destroyed, they do not convene a committee, lie down on a leather couch for therapy, or burst into tears...the first thing they do is weave their web anew."

It doesn’t even need the same branches or the same conditions. The silk comes from within, and the next form adapts to whatever is here now.

Watching animals behave this way has been increasingly fascinating to me because they seem so completely aligned with their own nature. The squirrel doesn’t need to be reminded that autumn is coming. It starts collecting nuts. Birds migrate. Trees lose their leaves. The spider spins.

There’s very little separation between what these creatures are and what they do.

Humans somehow ended up with a much messier situation.

We have memory and imagination, which are incredible capacities. We can learn from things that happened decades ago and imagine worlds that’s never existed.

But those same abilities trap us inside a web that disappeared years ago, or spend enormous energy worrying about prey that hasn’t been caught yet.

Something happens, and then we build a story around what happened.

Sometimes the event lasts ten minutes and the story lasts ten years.

More about this in my new Substack essay: “Taoist Lessons from Master Spider”

Some tools are like rafts, getting us across a rough patch in life.

But rafts are meant for crossing the river, not for carrying across the land.
What once supported us can eventually become dead weight.
We keep following rules we’ve outgrown.
We keep holding identities that no longer feel true.
We keep using survival strategies long after the danger’s passed.
We keep carrying old beliefs because they helped us make sense of the world.
Not because they still serve us, but because they’re familiar.
There’s gratitude in recognizing what carried us here.
But gratitude doesn’t require lifelong attachment.
We can honor the tool, acknowledge what it gifted us, and place it gently at the shore.
Then keep exploring the other side with less weight and more freedom.
Wisdom is not in never needing another raft.
It’s knowing when the crossing’s complete.

What carried you through the last season, but might be weighing you down in this one?

Tiny lesson from Tao Te Ching verse 9.

Success itself isn’t the trap.

An animal succeeds when it adapts to its environment. A project succeeds when the right conditions come together. A person succeeds through effort, timing, help, luck, and circumstance.
The danger begins when success becomes personal.
When it becomes proof of who we are.
When we begin craving the applause it brings.
When criticism feels like a threat.
When we become afraid that what we have built could disappear.
Then success becomes treasure.
And treasure creates something that must be guarded.
The more tightly we protect our reputation, position, achievements, or identity, the less safe we feel. Every change now carries the possibility of loss.
We may still appear successful from the outside. But inwardly, we are no longer free. Our success has become our master.
Verse 9 of the Tao Te Ching does not warn us against succeeding. It warns us against the vanity of success: the attachment, pride, and fear that can grow around it.
Perhaps the practice is not to reject what we create, but to hold it more lightly.
To do the work.
To appreciate what arises.
And to remember that none of it has to become who we are.
What success in your life has become difficult to hold lightly?

Verse 24 of the Tao Te Ching: "Those who tiptoe don't stand. Those who stride don't walk.”

In many respects, I am unlearning sprinting so that I may relearn how to walk. Why walk? Because it's natural and effortless. I'm just getting up and walking, and I can walk all day, every day.

Weekdays and weekends make no difference. Weekends are only necessary when we exhaust ourselves Monday to Friday striding.

Nature makes no differentiation between Wednesday and Sunday. Every day is a walking day if we intend and design it to be so, if we find our own pace and no one but our own.

What we will find is that those who continue to stride will leave us. Those who remain adapt to us like water.

In this lies the courage to be disliked, but more importantly, the courage to be our true selves.

Dear friends, I can close my laptop and still be inside the Matrix hours later. At the cafe. At dinner. With friends who deserve more than what’s left of me. With family who notice, even when they don’t say it.

This is the epiphany map I drew when I realized boundaries weren’t fixing it (link in my bio).

It’s a practice for mapping the different “Prism Selves” you carry — work, friend, family, community, athlete — so you can fully arrive in each one, and fully leave when it’s time.

Five questions is all you need to answer to define containers for each identity.

A block of wood holds infinite potential. It can become anything. But once it’s carved into a tool, its possibilities are limited.

The same is true for us.

In a world obsessed with learning more, doing more, and becoming more… this Taoist perspective invites us to soften:
✨ Release the need to accumulate knowledge
✨ Let go of rigid identities
✨ Return to your natural, uncarved state

Because when we stop forcing, something deeper unfolds.

“The sage seeks to lose rather than gain. By doing nothing, nothing is left undone.”

This is the paradox of true alignment—where surrender creates clarity, and emptiness becomes power.

🎙️ In this episode, we explore:
• Tao Te Ching wisdom for modern life
• The danger of over-accumulation (knowledge, identity, effort)
• How to create from alignment and devotion
• Why “doing less” may actually lead to more fulfillment

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, over-identified, or stuck in overdrive… this is your invitation to return to simplicity 🤍

I’ve been feeling restless. Like something is stuck within me. Deep rumbling underneath the surface, just waiting to erupt. January was a lot of activation energy, a lot of ground covered, a lot of seeds planted in different places. Now they are rooting in the dark, impatient to reach for the sun.

It seems like I’m not the only one. Many people seem to feel this way. A friend described it as rest-less. As in without rest. I reflected it back as tired agitation - you’re tired but you can’t sleep. The 12am mind that wants to keep going even after a long day.

Perhaps it is because we’re in Spring, the season of change, of new beginnings. But right before the growth is dormancy. Yet nature is anything but dormant. Trees lost their leaves in winter to amass core density and conserve energy. Contraction. So that it may expand to greater heights in Spring and continue its momentum into Summer.

Much like seeds that need to completely permeate its soil in the dark before sprouting in the light, so much of the most important things we do will never be seen. Outsiders will never see the contraction that happens before the expansion. That is okay. More than okay for it is what we need, despite us wanting to show the fruits of our labor. Wants built atop unmet needs is inherently unsustainable - as I learned the hard way from my depression, a prolonged period of contraction.

So today I’m sitting with the uncomfortable restlessness that is the beginning of Spring. Rather than forcing energy into my day, I’m listening to my mind’s need to rest, nourish and exercise my body so that I may accelerate my growth with ripe timing. Most importantly, so that I may enjoy 98% of the journey rather than speeding to the 2% that’s the outcome.
