What is the most important skill of the modern world?

Asking good questions.
This has always been crucial, but it’s even more critical in the AI age as the means of machine-built production becomes further democratized.

Therefore, you must ask yourself the right questions. This will not only help in knowing what you want for yourself and what you aim to build for others but also in effectively prompting the machine when leveraging AI.

It’s fascinating that in the Western tradition…
’Evil’ is to be eradicated in order for ‘Good’ to prevail.

It’s this warring relationship that gives this tension the negative bent that we commonly adopt today.

What if we can embrace, not just acknowledge, the duality within us?

To become a more whole, integrated character, I first have to honestly acknowledge all facets of who I truly am… & learn to accept my own inner darkness.

Isn’t it fascinating how we’re drawn to both simplicity and complexity?

I’ve realized that what seems simple is often complex, and what appears complex can be surprisingly simple.

I’ve always admired people who live simply, yet their lives are rich and full of interest. They’ve embraced simplicity after navigating through many complexities and challenges. This choice shows a deep intentionality; they’ve chosen to live this way for a reason.

This journey made me see that embracing simplicity doesn’t mean shunning complexity.

Instead, it’s about understanding and appreciating both sides, finding your path through them.

Stupidity is jumping into the unknown —
thinking that you know.

Courage is jumping into the unknown —
knowing that… In fact, you don’t know.

Personally, I have a mixed relationship with nostalgia, a sort of a double-edged sword.

On one hand, it serves as a reminder of my capabilities and achievements, providing a comforting bridge between the past and future.

However, the over glorification of the past has also held me back from learning new tools and stubbornly going down obsolete paths.

It stopped me in my tracks to hear Rick Rubin, the legendary music producer and author of The Creative Act, declare on a Huberman Labs podcast that he has no nostalgia whatsoever.

None.
— Instead, his focus is relentlessly set on the present and future, edging out any longing for the past in favor of continuous innovation and adaptation.

I have been obsessed with understanding the nature of things.

Not simply out of philosophical curiosity, but so that I am not caught off guard by life.

When we are negatively surprised—call it dismay or shock, we lose our capacity to think clearly and lash out; leading to a death spiral of blaming externals and loathing ourselves.

Over the years, I’ve learned to put this principle to practice in a variety of scenarios: making friends, starting new businesses or projects, closing deals / considering strategic partnerships, and making sense of news.

To explain,
When closing deals, I gauge a prospective corporate client, the first thing I do is to understand their world view by digging into their business model, KPIs, historical background, and strategic position. In other words, to map out their desires, fears, and identity.

The nature of the CEO plays a big role, especially for small private companies.

Not only is this mindset one of the most useful techniques in my arsenal, it’s also extremely efficient.

The nature of something doesn’t change as quickly as current technological, political, and social trends. In fact, surface-level effects are driven by the very nature of the field and its players.

I was going through a rough patch in London seven years ago.

I was angry, hopeless, and desperate all at the same time.

In hindsight, the people who had hurt me were perfectly aligned with their propensity. The nature of the “opportunities” I had put all my hopes in were in fact laden with risk that I wasn’t ready for.

The startup that I had left a prestigious venture capital position for was tanking.

I was going through a toxic breakup that brought out the worst in me.

The ambitious initiatives that I had spearheaded at the business school were falling apart just one year after I left.

Even the weather was getting darker and colder as we shifted into Winter.

So when I came across this passage from Meditations at a cozy bookstore in Piccadilly, it was a huge ah-hah moment: “Remember that as it is a shame to be surprised if the fig-tree produces figs, so it is for the physician and the helmsman to be surprised if a man has a fever, or if the wind is unfavorable.”
- Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

I realized that if I had kept my first impressions at bay, had deeply listened and observed instead, been more patient even, I would have caught on to the red flags.

In 2023, I lost a father and almost lost my wife. - It was by far the toughest year of my life.

I turned 36-years-old this week.

For my birthday, I wanted to reflect on everything that happened to make sure I never forget the lessons learned through hardship.

Reflection is the only way for our lived experiences to serve us into the future, to ensure that we don’t take our present gifts for granted.

On my side, there were two mindsets (defensive & offensive) that held me together and carried me through the most stressful period of last year.

The defensive one is the “Everything Mentality”.
- It’s about allowing everything to happen to you—be it negative events, positive events, as well as all the different emotions to wash over you. When you let everything happen to you, that’s when you are truly able to begin to accept what is happening.

But just playing defensive is not going to allow you to emerge onto the other side stronger.

This is where, on the offensive side, I adopted Kobe Bryant’s “Mamba Mentality”, which is this mindset of doing whatever it takes to meet your objectives.

It also meant waking up at 5am and running strict two-week sprints in order to be on top of my work, week over week.

A combination of ‘Everything’ and the ‘Mamba’ mentality is extremely effective.

This was, by far, the hardest video I have ever made.

It took two days to film with many false starts and tears of frustration.

There were many times when I felt defeated, ready to give up, and indeed had to the first day due to the dying daylight.

But I’m proud of myself for going back to the forest, physical and metaphorical, despite the resistance.

For pushing through the late nights and early mornings to finish editing and bringing this story to life.

Staying with Moji, in LA, was perhaps the most important thing to happen to me as I transitioned from vacation to work...

From freedom to structure — Why?
Precisely because he is the living example that routines, discipline, and hard work lead to flow, love, and service with the right intention and direction.

What he does goes beyond work.

It is a way of life.

Finely tuned and aligned to a higher source on a daily basis…
— yet remains grounded in humanity.

It is art.

As soon as I landed in the US, I was given the opportunity to stress test everything I learned.

For that, I’m thankful.

Life has a way of giving me what I need, rather than what I want…

I made a three-day detour to Los Angeles; this stop became a pivotal moment for integrating my travel lessons with everyday life.

How so? — as I had no way to anticipate how the week would ultimately unfold…

So instead, I allowed myself to lean into my newfound comfort in ambiguity, spontaneity, and IRL scenarios.

This gave me the ability to flow through each interaction with grace, presence, and ease.

In other words, I had put in the reps in Taiwan.

By the time I hit the US, my muscles were strong.
