When the Muse Returned

She returned
with the face
he had carried through his youth.

He waited for his heart
to recognize her.

Once, her smile on a screen
could keep him awake till morning.
He would leave the café
with a whole life beside him—
her hand in his,
a city neither of them knew.

Now she sat across the table.
She took off her coat.
Asked if he had eaten.

He said yes.
Then remembered he had not.

Outside, rain gathered
on the window.
He watched a drop descend
while she searched his face.

“You’re quiet.”

“I thought I would have
so much to say.”

She smiled,
and he felt the old habit
of waiting for something
to begin.

Nothing did.

For a moment he grieved
the boy who should have been there—
who would have trembled
when she said his name,
who had rehearsed this meeting
in rooms she would never see.

“Have I come too late?”
she asked.

He looked at her hands
resting beside the cup.

“I don’t know,” he said.
“I’ve been tired
for a long time.”

She stayed.

The tea cooled.
A waiter cleared
the empty tables around them.

At last she asked
if he wanted to walk.

He reached for his coat.

There were no stars
when they stepped outside.
Only rain,
and her waiting beneath the awning.

He stood beside her
and, for once,
had no idea
what happened next.
