Every book told me to let her cry it out. So I tried.
And I sat outside her door on the floor crying right along with her.
That was the night I stopped following the method and started listening to something else. Something quieter. Something that already knew what she needed before any book could tell me.
You already have that too. This month we have been talking about how to hear it again.

As parents, we canโ€™t attend every party, every gathering, or every moment our children experience.

Well, we can do is teach them how to think for themselves.

One of the tools Iโ€™ve shared with my teenagers is simple:

When you walk into a new situation, take a moment to observe, notice what people are doing. Notice what theyโ€™re consuming. Notice the energy in the room.

Then ask yourself

Is this who I wanna be?
Is this how I wanna show up?

Awareness creates choice

Choice creates confidence

Pause. Witness. Decide. Then move forward.

Follow for more simple, practical tools that help parents raise confident, connected, and thoughtful kidsโ€ฆ and help us not lose our minds along the way โค๏ธ by @shift.with.love

So many of us were raised in homes where we heard โ€œI love youโ€ all the time.

And yet, something was missing.

We had food on the table. A roof over our heads. Parents who worked hard to protect and provide for us.

But where was the warmth?
The tenderness?
 #shiftwithlove #ParentingWithPurpose #parenting101 #cyclebreaker #shiftwithlove #ParentingWithPurpose #parenting101 #cyclebreaker The feeling of being understood?

And what happens when we grow up knowing we were loved, but never quite knowing how love was supposed to feel?

We carry those questions into our relationships. Into our marriages. Into our parenting.

And sometimes, without realizing it, we begin repeating the very things we spent our childhood wishing were different.

Maybe the question isn't whether we were loved. Maybe it's what we learned love was supposed to feel like.

And whether that's the love we want to keep creating. by @shift.with.love

So many of us were raising homes where we heard โ€œI love youโ€œ all of the time.

Good job we knew our parents loved us.
They provided for us.
Protected us.
Made sacrifices for us.

And still, some of us were looking for the feeling of love somewhere else.

And a stuffed animal, we held tightly at night. In a friendship where we finally felt understood. And someone who made us feel wanted, valued, safe.

Because knowing someone loves you and experiencing that love inside yourself can be too very different things

And then we grow up.

We find ourselves in relationship relationships, wondering why love feels so confusing. Why we pull away when someone gets close. Why we hold on so tight leave when weโ€™re afraid of losing someone. Why we can say โ€œI love youโ€ to our children and still struggle to give them the tenderness we belong for our ourselves.

We are often trying to give something we were never fully shown how to receive.

And thatโ€™s worth getting curious about.

Not to blame our parents. Many of them were loving us in the ways they had learned.

But you recognize that we have choices now.

We can notice what we received, what we needed, what we learned to do without, and what we want to create different differently.

Our children can become a beautiful invitation to discover the places inside of our ourselves still longing to be heard, seen, accepted and understood

And perhaps, as we learned to meet those places within our ourselves, we begin to experience love in ways we never knew were possible.

What did love feel like in the home you grew up in?

And what do you want it to feel like in the Home youโ€™re creating today?

There is such a tender line in parenting between guiding our children and deciding who they should be.

We want to protect them.
Prepare them.
Teach them what we know.

And sometimes our fear gets mixed up with our love.

We correct before we get curious. We push before we understand. We become so focused on where they're going that we forget to notice who is standing in front of us.

Maybe our children don't need us to have all the answers.

Maybe they need to know there is room in their relationship with us to discover their own.

To disagree.
To change their minds.
To become someone we didn't imagine.

And to know that through all of it, we are still here - interested in knowing the person they are becoming.

Because perhaps one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is a relationship where connection never requires either person to disappear. #cyclebreaker #ParentingWithPurpose #parenting101 #shiftwithlove by @shift.with.love

This one made me pause when I realized it with my own kid.

Sometimes the shift isnโ€™t getting them to cooperate better.

Itโ€™s changing how weโ€™re showing up while they learn.

And honestlyโ€ฆ sometimes folding laundry together and watching a show is enough.

So much of the pain in parenting begins when we start treating our children like people we are supposed to control.

What to do.
How to do it.
When to do it.
Who to be.

And somewhere along the way, we can forget something incredibly simple:

๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ๐˜†'๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ.

Little people, yes. Developing people. People who need our guidance, boundaries and protection.

But still people.

People with their own thoughts, feelings, preferences, fears, experiences and ways of seeing the world.

What changes when instead of immediately trying to correct your child, you get curious about them?

Something changes between you.

And there is another part of this that I find beautiful.

As you begin giving your child the dignity of being heard, seen, accepted and understood, you may begin to recognize the places where ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚ needed those things too.

Because many of us grew up being managed, corrected and told who we should be.

And sometimes, in learning to meet our children differently, we discover another way of meeting ourselves.

Sometimes our kids arenโ€™t fighting the chore.

Theyโ€™re fighting the feeling of having to do it alone.

That doesnโ€™t mean we need to do everything for them. It doesnโ€™t mean they donโ€™t need to learn responsibility.

Sometimes it just means that connection makes the hard things feel a little less hard.

I knowโ€ฆ because my kid literally told me. โค๏ธ

And honestly? How many things might our kids be more willing to do if they didnโ€™t feel like they had to do them alone?

There comes a point in parenting when you realize:

I cannot protect my child from every party, every drink, every person, every bad decision or every situation they may find themselves in

And that is terrifying.

Because you know what can happen.

You know how quickly one drink becomes three. How differently people can behave when theyโ€™re inhibitions disappear. How a kid who knows better it can still make a choice that changes everything.

And you may find yourself, wondering:
Have I taught them enough?
Well, they know when someone is not safe?
Will they recognize when a situation has changed?
Well, they know what to do when Iโ€™m not there?

This is where I think we have an opportunity.

Instead of only telling our kids, what not to do, we can teach them how to see.

Watch.
Notice.
Pay attention.

What happens to people as they drink more?
Who becomes someone different?
When does something that seemed funny stop being funny?
When is someone too impaired to make a clear choice?
When is it time to leave?

And then talk about it.

Without judgment. Without pretending we have not needed a little โ€œliquid courageโ€ ourselves.

Our kids need more than rules for the situations we can predict.

They need discernment for the situations we canโ€™t.

And we can help them build it.

One honest conversation at a time.
