What an incredible night getting to show A BIT OF LIGHT to a full house at MISAFF, accepting the Best Screenplay award on Ali Asgari and Shadmehr Rastin’s behalf (with a recorded thank you from Ali!) and hearing how deeply the film connected with the audience. I had no idea the evening would be so emotional for me - I got choked up a few times during the Q&A. There really is something powerful about seeing this film on a big screen and that final scene seems to get me every time. I hope more people will see it in theatres as we continue to roll it out. Thank you to everyone that came out. Special mention to Executive Producer @shilpajo, @jefishburn, Kim Stadfeld and @seanmillargta for all the support!

Thank you Arshad Khan for including A BIT OF LIGHT in the festival and the MISAFF jury for recognizing the beautiful story that Ali and Shadmehr wrote. We so appreciate it. taken in Cineplex Cinemas Mississauga by @shilpajo

Talk about a latergram! I should’ve posted this a couple of weeks ago, but festival fatigue is real. 😂

I’ve been sharing lots of film stuff lately, so I thought I should explain how I got here…

I loved film long before I ever worked in finance.

But growing up, it wasn’t a career I was encouraged to pursue, so I followed a more conventional path, and spent 20 years building a career in finance and M&A.

But during the pandemic, I started thinking about what I wanted my career to look like…

I kept coming back to film. I love stories, how they connect us, how they can make you understand someone whose life looks nothing like yours, and I especially love how a story can stay with you for years.

In the past couple of years, I’ve had the good luck of meeting incredible people who have welcomed me into this industry.

Fast forward ⏩ and somehow got to the Venice Film Festival as an Executive Producer on A Bit of Light.

Being there made something click for me. I don’t feel like I’ve left my old career behind. So much of what I learned in finance, evaluating opportunities, structuring deals, raising capital, bringing people together, translates directly into independent film.

I’m just applying it to something I’ve loved and I’ve wanted to be part of for a very long time.

So that’s the story. Stay tuned 🎬✨

Still taking this all in ✨

This week, A Bit of Light had its world premiere in competition at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival.

Watching the film on the big screen, surrounded by more than 1,400 people was so moving. Even more so, was the 16 minute long standing ovation where the audience celebrated the film by cheering, clapping and even dancing. 👏🏽 👏🏽👏🏽

It was an extraordinary and well deserved welcome for a film that so many people went to great lengths to create.

It has been an honour to be part of that journey as an Executive Producer.

I’m especially grateful to sholehalemifabbri and @goodmeasureproductions for bringing me onto the project and making sure I had such an incredible experience in Venice. Sholeh, I deeply admire you and the generosity, care and leadership you bring to your work. Thank you for welcoming me so warmly and making this an experience I will remember forever.

Congratulations and gratitude to director @ali.asgari6246, lead producer @milad.khosravi.b, and the remarkable cast (with incredible performances by misagh_zare14, @sadaf.asg,
@forouzan_jamshidnejad) crew, and partners @salaud_morisset, who made this film possible.

And thank you to @labiennale for giving A Bit of Light such an unforgettable introduction to the world.

🎥🎬🍿🥰✨

Last week, we celebrated 30 years of Sheena’s Place. 💙🤍🩵

Hearing founders Trudy, Lynn and Jane speak at our anniversary celebration was a reminder of what can happen when people see a need and decide to do something about it. The community in that room is part of what they started.

This work is personal to many of us and we know the importance of having these spaces of community. I’m proud to help carry their work forward in a small way as co-chair of the Board.

Thank you to the founders for starting something that continues to matter to so many people, and to Juanita and the entire team for bringing us together for such a wonderful evening.

If you’re able, please consider donating to help Sheena’s Place continue offering free support: www.sheenasplace.org

Happy 30th, Sheena’s Place 💙🤍🩵

Looking back at the last couple of years and all the trips I never posted - huge experiences, minimal documentation. A lot changed during that time.
As we close out the year, it feels like the right time to start sharing a few.
