Idiom Dress Up Day was SO much fun!
My 5th graders showed up in the best costumes, and we spent the day playing matching games, acting out idioms, and just having a blast.
I couldn’t decide on just ONE idiom, so I went with a bunch — head in the clouds, cooking up a storm, lightning fast, and eyes in the back of my head (lots of weather vibes happening)!

Sit on 10! Example ⬇️

Player 1:“1, 2, 3”
Player 2: “4”
Player 3:“5, 6”
Player 4: “7, 8”
Player 5:“9”
Player 6:must say “10” and is out.

The game then resets, and the remaining players start a new round from 1. This continues until only one player remains, avoiding saying “10” each round.

🚨New Game 🚨

My students absolutely loved this game 💛💛💛

I heard about this one from @wildlylearnwithlittles and just had to try!

Mind Reader/Blank Slate

Setup:Each player receives a whiteboard and a marker.

Choose a Word: The teacher choose a word with a blank in front or behind it to write down. I write it on the whiteboard for everyone to see. Some examples: cold___, ___seat, magic ___, ___card.
✨✨✨OR you can pick a category like animals and they have to write a word that starts with a letter you give. Other category idea: candy, games, food.

Students Guess: They write their word on their own whiteboards. They should be back to back with their partner and not show their answer. Give students 30 seconds to think of an answer.

Reveal Answers: They reveal their answers simultaneously to their partner.

Scoring: If the partners think of different answers they stay in the game: showing that they can think outside the box. If partners think of the same answer they are out of the game. I’ve also played the game with everyone playing the whole time and no one gets out.

Find a new partner and the teacher can give a new word with a blank or another letter for the category!

My students were so creative with it!

✨There are a lot of things that make sense in my 5th grade classroom—like cozy lighting, book recs, and even an affirmation mirror. But the BEST thing that makes sense at the start of the year? Collaboration through a Breakout EDU game. 🗝️💡

My students get to problem-solve, communicate, and celebrate each other’s ideas while unlocking the game, and in the process, they’re building the classroom community we’ll rely on all year long.

🎉 Birthdays in 5th grade are a big deal! I’m so thankful to my past self for putting all my students’ birthdays (and half birthdays for summer kids ☀️) on the calendar at the start of the year—it makes celebrating them so easy.

Here’s what we do:
✨ A birthday card signed by the whole class
✨ A fun eraser
✨ Singing the birthday song
✨ A special shoutout at the end of the day

It’s a simple routine, but it makes each student feel seen and celebrated—and that’s my favorite part. 🥳💛

After meeting my students at before school conferences last night, I’m even more excited to see how they will bring this space to life. 💛 I’ve been intentional about creating a classroom where every student feels welcomed, valued, and loved—and I hope that is true. And remember even the most simple classroom can feel extraordinary when students know they’re loved. 🌟

I know it’s summer and you’re soaking up the sunshine (as you should!), but when that first historical fiction book questions rolls around in the fall—you’ll be so glad you saved this!

Also, I just recently added new genre based “What Should I Read Next” posters to the growing bundle that I think you’ll love!

One of my favorite end-of-year activities is getting feedback from my students using a simple Google Form. 📝 Their honest reflections help me make my classroom even better for next year! I couldn’t believe how many students loved writing poetry this year!

I also included a fun question: “What should Mrs. Vanden Hull do this summer?” 😎 Their responses had me laughing and tearing up at the same time. Kids really do say the best things! Jump over the Great Wall of China? Haha!

If you’re wrapping up your year, this is such an easy, meaningful way to connect and grow. 💛 Would you try this with your students?
