Cobalt reflects a bold lusciousness craved in a queer body at odds with the rigid expectations of a Japanese upbringing. Traversing aesthetic minimalism, gentle provocation, and oscillating portraits of identity, Cobalt is an intimate, vibrant solo work that can strike a chord with anyone on a journey of radical self-acceptance.

I am excited to head to Calgary soon for the first stop our tour for Omote (面) performances with Shion Skye Carter (@shionskye)

Thank you to @springboardyyc for the invitation to perform at Fluid Fest, and thank you also to @eskerfoundation for hosting and co-presenting our performances there!

Workshop and performances are sold out but there are waitlists that are worth signing up for. Feel free to DM me directly if you are desperate for tickets as I have a couple set aside. Preference will be given to the Japanese Canadian community in Calgary but I also want to accommodate fans of our work!

Omote (面) | Artist Highlight

Shion Skye Carter | Choreographer, Performer
Shion Skye Carter (they/she) is a dance artist originally from Gifu, Japan, based in Vancouver, BC on the unceded, traditional lands of the Coast Salish peoples. Through a movement language of sensitive intensity, hybridizing choreography with heritage forms like calligraphy, and interweaving materiality into performance, Shion’s artistic practice peels apart layers of identity and reflects on the complex human experience.

Miya Turnbull | Choreographer, Performer, Mask Creator
Miya Turnbull (she/her) is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Kjipuktuk (Halifax, NS), originally from Alberta. Working across sculpture, photography, video and performance, her practice is rooted in mask-making. She is best known for her ongoing series of Photo-Masks; life-like self-portraits that are altered and reconfigured to explore identity, persona and cultural hybridity as mixed Japanese Canadian. She has collaborated with dance artists such as Shion Skye Carter and Emiko Agatsuma, performing with her masks in Halifax, Montréal, Toronto and Vancouver. taken in Esker Foundation by @shionskye

Omote (面) | Shion Skye Carter & Miya Turnbull | Esker Foundation | October 24th & 25th

Omote (面) is a co-creation between Vancouver dance artist Shion Skye Carter and Halifax mask maker Miya Turnbull. The artists explore their mixed Japanese Canadian heritage with a myriad of deeply expressive hand-crafted and personalized masks. The choreography serves to collate and contrast their experiences and family histories, while evoking the intimate and ritualistic nature of Japanese traditions.
