I was inspired by another painter to simplify my sunflower bouquet that I started a few days ago. Here it is with more simplification on the main flower in particular and a completely new background. I’m happier with it now so I’m calling it done. This is oil on a 16 inch canvas.

A 2 hour oil painting start of my starting to droop sunflowers; I think they’re more interesting when they’re not so perky. I’ll put this away to dry and maybe come back later to it.

It was a simply gorgeous day today in Assiniboine Park. Susan and I met at the English Garden and painted the dahlias. I painted in gouache in my Hannemuhle sketchbook. It seemed like just moments after we finished our painting, 3 or 4 gardeners came and ripped out all the plants we were painting. Whew, now that was close!

Just a few sketches done in a black mixed media pad. The first is of a bowl of plums in one of my 4 larger ramen bowls where each bowl is a different pattern. The second is of my “rocking chickens” which sit on my usually sunny windowsill in my kitchen. I have used only gouache, Derwent colorsoft pencils and sometimes a copic marker.

Back to my home studio so thought I’d start thinking of how to turn all the reference material I gathered in Saskatchewan over 10 days. I haven’t worked in pastel for a long time but sometimes certain ideas demand certain mediums. A sunset sky over an undulating Saskatchewan road seems to call for a pastel painting on dark or black paper. I had one small unsanded piece of black paper to test the idea of this painting. I also show the palette of pastels that I used to do this little painting. My conclusion is I like the idea of pastel on black BUT the composition needs some work. I’d really like to feature that sky. Happy to have got something done! by @shirleyarayner

Stopped in Chamberlain SK for lunch so took a bit of time to paint their elevator which was right across the street. I resisted painting elevators until now. by @shirleyarayner

I painted on the south Saskatchewan River in the Cranberry Flats conservation area. I love this place and have painted it once before. The weather this afternoon was perfect for painting. We had a nice chat with a couple from Minneapolis. Both paintings were done in a hannemuhle watercolor book with gouache. by @shirleyarayner
