IN the SHOW!   The MSA 1st Annual Members Juried Exhibition received 131 submissions from 51 members, from which 34 pieces were accepted into the Exhibition. The Show was held at the Piano Nobile Gallery (Centennial Concert Hall). The Exhibition is still online on the MSA website (see weblink in the MSA profile).   Included within the juried exhibition was a 19.25” x 24.5” soft pastel painting by Shirley Rayner MSA entitled “Tree Rhythms.”   Shirley is an award winning Winnipeg based artist. Having dabbled in art making since the age of 5, she started a serious art practice in 2008. Although known primarily as an artist that works in soft pastel, she also works in acrylic, oil, several water-based mediums, and printmaking. Shirley’s primary inspiration for painting is the landscape, both local and what she has seen on her travels. Her small town upbringing also gave her a love of being outdoors which is why you will find her sketching and painting outdoors when weather permits.   For additional information regarding Shirley’s portfolio, check out her website: https://www.shirleyraynerart.com/, her Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/shirley.a.rayner/ ,or her Instagram feed @shirleyarayner.   Stay tuned over the next few days as the other artwork from the Exhibition will also be showcased. You can also see the Exhibition online at the MSA website: https://www.manitobasocietyofartists.com/2026-amje, or click the Exhibition link in the MSA’s Instagram profile.   The CALL for the MSA 1st Annual SIGNATURE Juried Exhibition is also now OPEN on the MSA website! This Exhibition will be exclusively open to all Signature and Honourary Life Members of the MSA. This hybrid show will be presented online and at the Piano Nobile Gallery (Centennial Concert Hall) from October 1 – November 13, 2026. MSA AWARD WINNER!   The MSA 94th Open Juried Competition and Exhibition (OJCE) received 193 submissions from 71 Manitoba artists, from which 61 pieces from 42 artists were accepted into the Exhibition.   In recognition of the spectacular work that was submitted, the MSA expanded the planned prize fund by over 35% to a total of $3,300 – the LARGEST in recent MSA history! Following a detailed review of the submissions, 11 pieces received an MSA award.   An Honourable Mention Award ($100) went to Susan Graham McDougall for her 8” x 10” oil painting “House on Albany Street”.   Susan is an award-winning Manitoba oil painter whose work celebrates the beauty of everyday landscapes and still lifes. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) from the University of Manitoba and is known for luminous, observation-based paintings marked by strong composition and a nuanced sensitivity to light, atmosphere, and place.   * “I often go painting 'en plein air'. I don't usually finish a painting on site because I work slowly. I’m usually on site for a minimum of two to three hours and during that time of close observation, I usually develop a fairly accurate memory of what I've seen to take home with me. I often don't refer to the photos I've taken but try to rely on my memory and the atmosphere of the place. What I'm considering first is composition and broader value shapes, and I note whether I want higher or lower values to dominate in the painting.”   * “In ‘House on Albany Street’ I wanted to give the impression that it was painted effortlessly. It was also begun en plein air, and I was attracted to the juxtaposition of the red car and the red striped awnings.”   For additional information regarding Susan’s portfolio, check out her Instagram feed: @susan_graham_mcdougall_art!   Stay tuned over the next few days as the other artwork from the OJCE will also be showcased. You can also see the Exhibition online at the MSA website: https://www.manitobasocietyofartists.com/ojce-2026 or click the Exhibition link in the MSA’s Instagram profile.   Be part of the Movement ...
