The Jungle Never Gives a Second ChanceIt was a scorching afternoon in the forest. We were searching for a tiger when we found a magnificent male resting in a shallow waterhole, completely relaxed. Frogs hopped across his body as if he were just another rock in the pond. The tiger barely moved, conserving energy in the heat.About 200 meters away, a group of sambar deer stood near a small swamp, cooling themselves. After some time, the herd slowly moved away, one by one. But one male sambar chose to stay behind. Perhaps he felt safe. Perhaps he was too comfortable to leave.The jungle does not reward such mistakes.In a split second, the peaceful scene exploded into action. The tiger launched from his resting place with incredible speed and precision. The lone sambar realized the danger too late. There was no second chance, no opportunity to correct the mistake. Within moments, the hunt was over, and the tiger had secured a precious meal.I was fortunate to witness the entire drama unfold before my eyes. It was a powerful reminder of a simple truth: in the jungle, one mistake can be the last. We humans are far luckier. The term “Royal Bengal Tiger” is a historical name rather than a separate species.Here’s why: “Bengal” refers to the Bengal region (present-day Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal). During British rule, many of the first scientifically documented tigers came from this region, so the subspecies became known as the Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris). The word “Royal” was added during the British colonial era. One popular explanation is that it became associated with the grandeur of these magnificent tigers after a royal hunting expedition by the Prince of Wales (later King George V) in India in 1911. Built for speed, cheetahs rely on short bursts of acceleration to hunt antelopes and other small prey across Africa’s open grasslands.Despite their incredible hunting skills, cheetah cubs face a difficult life.
