Continuing my retrain project, I recently met with Kate, founder of @unpluggedkids_club wellness practitioner, nature lover and all-round wonderful human.

Kate - "I qualified in Psychology and spent 15 years working within NHS mental health services, alongside a decade supporting student wellbeing at university. I loved the client-led, face-to-face work I was doing and found it incredibly rewarding to walk alongside people, understand their experiences and support them through their own journeys.

However, when Covid-19 arrived, much of my work moved online. I found myself spending more time behind a screen than I would have liked. To create balance, I began spending lots of time outdoors, exploring nature, foraging for wild plants and reconnecting with myself.

I noticed such a positive impact this had on my own wellbeing that I began sharing this with my clients. I started inviting some of them for walking sessions in Bushy Park, and I witnessed a real shift. Away from clinical spaces and surrounded by nature, people seemed to relax, become more present and find a different kind of connection that supported their wellbeing.

That became the pivotal moment when I realised I wanted my work to be my lifestyle. I decided to leave my secure job and follow a path I didn’t yet fully understand, not knowing where it would lead. Leaving a stable career felt like a huge leap of faith, but five years on, I can see that what felt like such a crazy choice at the time was actually a step towards something I was always meant to do.

Today, I run Unplugged Kids Club, which gives children the chance to step away from screens and immerse themselves in hands-on outdoor experiences. Through forest activities, creativity and play, they can build confidence, discover new skills and experience the joy of being part of a community."

I asked Kate what advice she would give her younger self?

"Trust yourself and let go of your fears. You don’t need to have all the answers or know exactly where your path will lead. Have faith that by following your instincts, you will find fulfilment and discover where you are meant to be." #sarahhoganphoto #retrainproject #unpluggedclub by @shoganphoto

Sharing this image today for Rare Chromosome Day.

When our daughter was six, she was diagnosed with a rare genetic syndrome. It took nearly four years to finally find answers to the many questions we had about her differences.

During those years we spent a lot of time in hospitals, meeting specialists, waiting for appointments, and navigating numerous tests. Certain things became part of our visual memory, her school uniform, the NHS blue curtains, and the stickers she was given at the end of each appointment as a small reward for getting through something difficult.

As a visual person, I wanted to explore what that journey felt like. My daughter and I began creating our own stickers inspired by different procedures and experiences. This image came from a memory of an ECG, where I imagined the cables transformed into the stems of a bouquet she was holding.

This is part of an ongoing series about her journey, understanding her diagnosis, and finding ways to talk about it while respecting her privacy.

It is also a celebration of her courage and the kindness we have encountered from the #NHS and @greatormondst staff along the way 💙

We are deeply grateful to @unique_charity whose research and resources have helped us better understand her condition and connect with other families like us. Thank you 💙

Sisters Seen is a collaborative portrait project by members of @f22aop with a simple but powerful idea: women photographers photographing women photographers. We become both of photographer and the subject.

@wendycarrigphotography is a fellow founding member of @f22aop and an exceptional photographer and storyteller. I’ve long valued Wendy’s support, insight and encouragement particularly when it comes to entering awards. I have learned so much from her over the years.
Inspired by her photobook The Woman Who Fell to Earth, I wanted to incorporate elements of that story into her portrait: the motorcycle helmet, leathers and beach finds, while aiming to capture her playful spirit, creativity and strength.
You can see Wendy’s portrait of me at @sisters_seen

SISTERS SEEN is a new arts initiative with a simple but powerful idea: women photographers photographing women photographers.
In an act of collective visibility created by the supportive community @f22aop we become both the photographer and the photographed.

This is my portrait of photographer Sarah Hogan whose gaze and visibility remain strong through a collage of layered reflections and glass.
Sarah is known for her award winning interiors & still life work (she is the holder of a coveted AOP gold award) and her vast array of published works, notably the book Bold British Design. She is also a highly accomplished portrait photographer and won first place in the @nationalportraitgallery's Family Jubilee Competition. It is the NPG who are leading today's International Portrait Day celebrations. The recognition was important for Sarah as the portrait was a gentle collaboration with her autistic daughter.

As well as photographing Sarah, and in keeping with the collaborative process of @sisters_seen, it was my absolute pleasure to be photographed by her. You can see the resulting portrait @shoganphoto
Thank you Sarah for 'seeing' me. And thank you f22 for creating an intriguing and compelling project 📸⚡️

Continuing my Retrain project I recently met with Kathryn.

Former professional HR specialising in learning and development, now a holistic health practitioner using Ayurveda and Hypnotherapy to support clients across the world. Kathryn also happens to be part of a local Bee Keeping group because in her words “ let’s be honest, without bees, life would be very different.”

“Watching the bees, they are so intelligent. They innately know what to do without any education...every bee has its role. And when they work together, they create the most wonderful stuff. I'm not fussed if we get honey or not. That's a bonus if we harvest honey. But actually nurturing them and giving them a home. It is divine. Unsurprisingly, Honey is revered in Ayurveda. Raw natural honey is a medicine within itself. Warming, and sweet, it has huge medicinal benefits.”

I asked Kathryn if there is any advice she’d give someone, maybe just starting out in their career or what advice do you wish someone had given you?

A. Pursue what inspires you and ignites the fire in your belly. And how can you then be of service? To humanity that Is, I think is really important. #retrainproject #sarahhoganretrainproject #sarahhoganphoto #adelectablelife by @shoganphoto

Resharing one of my favourite images on what would have been Queen Elizabeth II 100 birthday. This image of my daughter dressed as HRH QEII won first prize in the @nationalportraitgallery Family Jubilee photography competition a few years back. Special image for me as my autistic daughter actually let me dress her up and held her own, her gaze unwavering. In honour of all queens 👸🏻 and girl power 🙅🏻‍♀️ sometimes a look can say it all! Thank you again to the judge @kymaraakinpelumi 💙 and the NPG Youth Forum #portraitofaqueen #sarahhoganphotography #NPGjubileewinner by @shoganphoto
