Thank you @betawards voters for nominating Number One on the Call Sheet in the BEST MOVIE category!!! As the only documentary, it is an enormous honor to be in the mix of all the nominees. Congrats to @sinnersmovie for the win!

THANKS to all my creative partners!! While long overdue, it is fully heartfelt. I/we put our foot into making this two-part documentary. It was hard. But we knew this chance would not come up again.

It has been personally meaningful to tell the women’s story. While I/we brought the craft — it could only be as good as your stories. Just know, any/all accolades are for you!

Lights. Camera. Truth.

Apple TV+’s Number One on the Call Sheet turns the camera around on more than thirty of Hollywood’s A-list Black actors and actresses’ journeys set out to remind us that Black actors aren’t just here; they’ve been here—fighting for space, legacy, and respect since the dawn of cinema.

The two-part documentary digs into the unfiltered reality of being Black in Hollywood. Not just the wins, but the near-misses, the coded rejection, and glass ceilings that, though cracked, haven’t fully shattered.

The Apple Original Film is produced by what some may call the Mount Rushmore of Black Hollywood: Jamie Foxx, Kevin Hart, Angela Bassett, and Halle Berry, with acclaimed visionaries Reginald Hudlin and Shola Lynch are in the directors’ chairs.

Together, they craft a project that takes you on a ride through Black movie history that doesn’t just celebrate the resilience and success stories of Black Hollywood’s elite; it looks at the cost of being “the first,” the responsibility of being “the only,” and what’s required to stay at the top.

Hudlin and Shola pulled back the curtain to talk director to director about the truth about the movie industry, the power of legacy, and what it took to create this powerful two-part documentary.

The Protector

Shola Lynch, the award-winning documentarian behind Free Angela and All Political Prisoners, paints a beautiful portrait of the Black actress’s achievement in the film industry and real-life struggles Number One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Women in Hollywood.

From Cicely Tyson’s trailblazing performances to Halle Berry’s historic Oscar win to Angela Bassett’s still-undeniable screen presence, the film examines what it takes for a Black woman to lead, and to demand the space she deserves.

As Lynch puts it, “You have to empower those who deserve it. And remember, the fight’s never over. To hear these stories from these 17 women who have figured it out for themselves and are still figuring it out.”
