POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

There are some moments that bring so many chapters of your life together.

Today, I had the joy of returning to my academic home, Spelman College, to celebrate the extraordinary career of my longtime friend, pioneering filmmaker and professor, @dash_julie at the Mary Schmidt Campbell Center for Innovation & the Arts.

Julie and I have known each other for decades, so it was especially meaningful to be there alongside so many incredible women, including Spelman President Ayanna Howard, @akadogo, @b_esme6009, and @sholalynch, honoring Julie’s work, vision and lasting impact on American cinema.

Returning to Spelman for a moment like this felt full circle. To celebrate a friend in a place that has been part of my own journey, surrounded by artists, activists, educators, storytellers and Julie’s incredible students in the documentary filmmaking program continuing to shape what comes next, was truly special.

A special thanks to my dear friend @bevshef, founding director of the Women's Research and Resource Center and the Anna Julia Cooper Professor of Women's Studies and English at Spelman who gave my idea for documentary filmmaking its first home on campus.

Congratulations, Julie. What a joy to celebrate you and the legacy you continue to build. 💜

Squad. This is the beautiful village that holds up BLACK GIRLS ROCK.

I’m filled with gratitude for the vision Beverly Bond dared to build, and for the brilliance, labor and love of the Black women who bring it to life. Grateful to God for the opportunity to stand among this village and contribute my gifts to work where passion and purpose meet.

“Daughters of the Dust” Legacy Screening at Atlanta Film Festival 2026 🎬🎞️! One of my all time favorite films has influenced so many other works including “Eve’s Bayou” and “Lemonade.” It was thrill to see it again on the big screen with a special appearance by Director/Writer/Producer Julie Dash interviewed by Shola Lynch with an introduction by Monique Younger.
Presented by Alliance of Women Directors.
