POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
We Do Not Care Club meets tonight at 6:00pm, at Seven Stories in Shawnee.

For the perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause community.

We Do Not Care if you’re wearing makeup.
We Do Not Care what your hair looks like.

Wear pajamas. Wear slippers. Wear yesterday’s sweatshirt. We Do Not Care.

Bring a beverage (adult or not), something to snack on, and come hang out with people who understand the feeling of no longer pretending to have it all together.

ALWAYS meets 2nd & 4th Thursdays at 6pm!
(But... if you show up at 6:17? Can you guess what we'll think? Well... We simply just do not care.)

Did you know Seven Stories is one of roughly 500 bookstores partnering with @librofm for a Banned Book read-in? Well... we are!

According to PEN America, nearly 12,000 books were banned in public schools during the 2025–2026 school year. They report that this marks the highest total since tracking began 5 years ago.

People often look at numbers like these and think, “But that’s not happening here,” or “But that didn't affect us.”

But did you know that in 1993, Shawnee Mission and Olathe students began protesting after schools removed Nancy Garden’s Annie on My Mind? Students pushed back by checking out 3,000 challenged books in just one day. In Olathe, the controversy led to the landmark 1995 civil rights lawsuit Case v. Unified School District No. 233, in which the district was ultimately ordered to return the book to library shelves.

This is not an isolated issue; it's everywhere!

Tomorrow, Saturday, October 10, is the last day of Banned Books Week, and we're celebrating with our Read-In at Seven Stories.

You’re welcome to bring your own book, grab a seat, choose from our snack options, and get reading! Stay for as long or as little as you like.

Alternatively, you can do it the Seven Stories way! Grab a set of our audiobook club headphones and jump into our full-day listening schedule. Join whenever you're comfortable, and you're welcome to browse the store or grab a seat while you listen.

This year's audio lineup includes an impactful opening from Mr. Rogers, a banned-book feature of Roald Dahl's James and the Giant Peach (a kid-friendly book option), Reading Rainbow's beloved LeVar Burton in conversation with Stacey Abrams, and a very honest and impactful response to book bans and Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from Percival Everett, leading into several hours of listening to his award-winning novel James.

Plus, from 3–6 PM, join us for one of our Seven Stories Blackout poetry sessions! No need to bring supplies. This is a fun, low-pressure activity!

👀 Can't wait to see you all!

Happy Sunday! Today is a great day to stop by the bookshop, and pick up our bookclub picks, if you haven't already!

Ou Night Owls Bookclub meets the last Tuesday of every month at 7 PM at the bookshop and focuses on horror, thriller, and suspense. It’s also secretly a potluck club, where members often bring a dish inspired by the book (or just something they’ve been wanting to try), but there’s absolutely no pressure to bring anything!

There’s also no pressure to finish the book. We love when you read along, but Night Owls is just as much about getting together and having a place to unwind. We’re a small, easygoing group and always happy to welcome new members. 🖤

This month, we’re reading The Whistler by Nick Medina, following Henry Hotard as he returns to the reservation where he grew up, and learns to navigate life in a wheelchair while confronting the past and the events that changed his life. All tying back to when he whistled at night... a thing he was explicitly warned never to do.

The Whistler is available in paperback and hardcover at Seven Stories.

If this sounds like your kind of book, or your kind of group, come chat with us! And if you can’t make the meeting, you’re always welcome to read along or check out our past picks in the Night Owls display!

Open until 3pm this Sunday! taken in Shop7Stories by @shop7stories

Thank you, Dolly, for believing in the power of books. Every child deserves access to books and the opportunity to discover their magic.

AND... thank you to the states that continue to invest in the Imagination Library, and to everyone who continues to encourage them to do so.

If you believe in books, literacy, and children, I hope you will take action. Speak up! Let your legislators know these programs matter!

I’ll admit, last school year was challenging for me. But one of the things that kept me excited was the idea of opening the mailbox when I got home, and maybe finding a few postcards waiting for me. In the in-between, waiting for my @postcrossing cardsto be registered, I found myself looking around and wondering who else I could mail to.

I knew there were 1000s of mail clubs, but where were the ones run by bookshops? It made sense; readers already show an interest in analog activities. For many of these readers, writing seems like a natural fit. So I did it. I discussed with some of our devoted customers, ran it by not 1, but 3 of our postal workers, and started planning.

Everything was ready to go… when I noticed that our logo said "boookshop" with 3 O’s! How was it possible that I printed it on all kinds of things, and posted it online, and not once did I notice, nor did another person point it out!

We took all of the misprinted items, set them aside, and started over. This took us time and set us behind, but I am excited to finally say that ALL envelopes went out last week! And… here, you're looking at a sneak peek of some of what was inside. Each comes with banded washi and ephemera packs, as well as a reading tracker, postcards, and a monthly newsletter. Monthly members also received a member sticker and instructions for setting up their member card, which you will receive in your next mailing!

Because we were running behind this month, I've also chosen to send another mailing to our one month participants. This means that if you chose the option for one month only, rather than a subscription, you will be receiving this mailing, as well as the one for the month of September.

Thank you for supporting what it is that Seven Stories does, and encouraging me to branch out and incorporate more of what I love! It means so much to be in month one, and already have so many fantastic people joining us. ❤️ ✉️ 🫂

If you are interested in joining our mail club family, you can find more info at shop7stories.com. This bookshop mail club is $9 per month. You receive a 5x7 envelope with bookshop themed fun, and journaling ephemera! taken in Shop7Stories by @shop7stories

Watcha reading today?

Here's our stack!

Never Let Me Go is being read by me (Halley 😆) for school. If you remember the last time I did one of these posts... I was, in fact, still reading it. People always think that having a bookstore means I read 100s of books every year... but I also happen to be a slow reader! After this, I hope to start another one of his novels, Klara and the Sun. Have you seen the trailer for the movie adaptation yet?

A Midnight Pastry Shop Called Hwawoldang is also mine, and I'm in the home stretch! The goal is to finish it before Cozy AZN Book Club this Wednesday, the 26th. I'm excited to discuss it with those of you who are joining us!

Not pictured... is also several audiobooks, including Behind Five Willows by June Hur!

The bottom two are my mom's current reads.

The 1st one (title not shown) is the October Memoir pick for our Blind Date with a Book Club! We got our copies in this weekend, and they've been wrapped and placed at the counter. What we CAN say... is that this is a perfect October memoir... it's truly HER month!

The 2nd one, Enormous Wings, follows Pepper Mills, 77 years old and newly moved into a retirement home, who unexpectedly finds out that she's pregnant! My mom has been on a "weird book" kick lately, so when I saw this, I knew I needed to shove it her way. What started as me recommending a book to my mom resulted in my mom convincing my grandma to join in. So... it is now a family read 😆.

Not Pictured... is Against The Loveless World! Which, like me, my mom started months ago, and didn't have the chance to pick back up until now.

Enough about us. Seriously, what are YOU reading? Let us know and/or post a photo of your stack in the comments!

OR stop by the shop (9–3 this Sunday) to tell us in person! Both of us are here and happy to discuss past or current reads, or recommend something totally new! taken in Shop7Stories by @shop7stories

Curious about the Journal Bag? We carry it!

Our partnership with Paulina began years ago, at our 2nd-ever location. 450sq ft, across from Shawnee City Hall. It was August of 2024. I had removed EVERYTHING from my store, replacing it with Asian-authored & illustrated titles, products from Asian makers, and language-learning material. Asia is made up of 50 countries, thousands of languages, hundreds of ethnic groups, and is 59% of the world population. I wanted to share the numbers, address the tension around saying the authors’ names out loud, and challenge the idea that every title is about struggle.

Among these creators was Paulina.

She’s a great example of the people we work with. Her business is a labor of love, and like us, she does not just take a casual and token interest in her community.

When I saw this bag, I knew I needed one, and later, that turned into multiple orders, a dedicated shelf, and became one of my favorite items to talk about in the store.

Some use it for journaling, as a daily purse, or to carry reading materials. I’ve used mine for more than one of these, and it deserves all the attention it’s getting! Available in EVERY solid color, each comes with an adjustable crossbody strap, mesh panel for pins, sticker sheets, Velcro storage pouch, 6-ring binder system, and side folders.

All of that to say… this is a product I believe in.

At Seven Stories, we don’t buy based on popularity and whatever publishers tell us is the next big hit. We buy based on the work, the creator, customer feedback, and ultimately stock products that we are willing to stand behind.

There are reasons why we do things the way we do. I’m happy to tell you about it! But what you need to know now is that we started in an untraditional way, and when we did open, there were no other bookstores to pattern ourselves off of. That's a good thing! So, while we might not have every book out there, we hope you will take a chance with us and try out something new.

To our regulars, thank you for spending your time, energy, and money with us, and for sending us into year 5 (more on that to come!) with good energy!

Tonight’s Club Update!!

Today is the first day of the school year for many in the Shawnee Mission School District, which is causing a little havoc in our schedules! Because of that, we’ll be putting off We Do Not Care Club for tonight.

On top of that, I’ve had to acquire a new phone, hence the late notice, as I’m still getting everything set up.

In the meantime, we’ll see you next time! And remember to submit your photo if you haven’t already. ❤️ taken in Shop7Stories by @shop7stories
