7.30pm - 9pm Sunday 8th November Spiritland at the Barbican In Conversation with Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein (Stranger Things) Composers Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein are hosted by film journalist and Stranger Things fan Dan Jolin for an intimate night of music and conversation at the brand new Spiritland at the Barbican. Texas-raised composer duo Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein went from playing in the preeminent live synth act S U R V I V E to writing the timeless themes of Stranger Things, earning a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme and two Grammy nominations. Their film work includes Rashid Johnson’s Native Son (A24/HBO Films), Joaquín del Paso’s Hole in the Fence and Amat Escalante’s Perdidos en la Noche, which premiered at Cannes. Through Short Hour, they now self-release new and previously unreleased music, while Dixon has founded Hourglass Recordings to put out vinyl editions and more. As longtime acolytes of Italian library music, they recently recorded at the Museo del Synth Marchigiano in Macerata, using rare Elka and CRB synthesizers and materials salvaged from the Farfisa organ factory. Just 50 tickets are available for this night so get yours and we look forward to seeing you at our first talk at Spiritland at the Barbican. #strangerthings #soundtracking #ost #strangerthingsnetflix by @short_hour
Setting the mood with the Moog Muse. Here’s a few moments from @kvledixon and @michaelstein on The Stranger Thing Tour. 🎹   Check them out on upcoming European dates! (last slide)   Here’s a message from the guys:   “Hey, this is Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, and we’re judging Moog’s Monster Noise Contest.   Make your own monster noise on any Moog instrument and send it in. Our favorite wins a Moog Labyrinth.   Looking forward to hearing what you come up with, and come hear the Moog Muse live at our upcoming Stranger Things concerts in Europe.”   #MoogMonsterNoise by @short_hour
Check out this #MoogMonsterNoise from @michaelstein, composer of Stranger Things and more. Using the Moog Messenger and a tape loop, he builds a beautifully eerie and evolving world of sound. 📼 We’re loving the submissions you’ve shared with us so far! So, don’t forget to share your best Moog monster noise by October 31 for a chance to win a Labyrinth. The winner will be chosen by guest judges @michaelstein and @kvledixon. Crafted with care: records we loved pressing 💛 KYLE DIXON & MICHAEL STEIN - MARCHE 22 “Marche 22” was recorded over a week at the Museo Del Synth Marchigiano in Macerata, Italy. The museum is filled with rare and obscure synths (especially CRB, GEM & Elka) as well as salvaged materials from a nearby shuttered Farfisa organ factory, including MARS, an unfinished realtime audio processing application developed by IRIS - similar to the now well known MAX/MSP. Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein play a suite of pieces that encompasses the last sixty years of synthesizer music - there are nods to Cluster, Tangerine Dream, Jean Michel Jarre, and Morton Subotnick. Dixon and Stein are like jazz masters playing the American songbook with their own riffs and quotations. What shines through in these varied works that are sometimes rhythmic, sometimes melancholic, and sometimes both, is a soul, a spirit, an emotion vibrating through the tones like the charge of coming rain or the thrum of a distant train on the tracks. Out on August 28 💥 Few copies will be available on the Mother Tongue webshop 🔗 Link in bio. @hourglass_recordings @kvledixon @michaelstein @short_hour #mothertonguerecords by @short_hour

10 years ago this day I stumbled upon a new @netflix TV show called Stranger Things. It was a brand new release that the algorithm had presented to me . I had no other knowledge , had read nothing about this & was completely in the dark as to what the show was. I was blown away, not only by the show itself but the incredible synth heavy score. I was on holiday in Cornwall (south west coast of England for those that don’t know it ) & there was a huge storm - anything other than watching TV indoors wasn’t an option. I had very poor phone signal & wasn’t able to text or chat with anyone about what I’d seen. I made a decision (which turned out to be one of my better ones) & braved the wind and rain & went up onto a cliff edge where I knew I would have some mobile reception. I rang my good friend Brian McNelis of LA’s @lakeshorerecords. Brian was in Wisconsin on holiday himself at the time . I told Brian to stop whatever he was doing, get Netflix on & watch Stranger Things. I pleaded with him to make the call to Netflix ASAP. Brian is never one to miss out on a opportunity & reached out. The rest is history really. 10 years on to the day & Stranger Things has been such a huge part of @invadarecords & Lakeshore’s label history. @kvledixon & @michaelstein music sounds as fresh as it did on July 15th 2016. by @short_hour

Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein performing Stranger Things 📍 Castello Magalotti Che dire? ✨🌙 @lacatasta @comunedifiastraufficiale #strangerthings #fiastrapalooza #lagodifiastra by @short_hour
