Om Jawereya —

A story about a family of 5. Ibrahim the father, Hadeer the mother, and their 3 daughters; Mareya, Hoor El 3ein, and Jawereya the eldest. I was wandering around Laguna Beach in Dahab during sunset time taking photos with my phone, and I could see those 3 young girls from afar running around, playing, dancing and just being kids. The youngest girl Mareya was the first to make eye contact with me. I waved at her from afar and she waved back. I then lingered around them for a while, and observed the setup.

An old white vintage FIAT parked on the sand, a few meters away from the shimmering blue lagoon, Ibrahim and Hadeer were sitting barefoot on a blanket laid on the ground, with their backs leaned on the car, legs comfortably straight and a bag of Lib (roasted seeds) shared between them in the middle. Playing old Arabic music from the car radio and enjoying the sounds of their daughters movements and giggles. I could feel the rawness, simplicity and joyfulness from afar. I wanted to get closer to get some shots of the scene and so I did, and then I saw Hadeer the mum giving her phone to the eldest daughter asking her to take photos of herself and her sisters. And that was my queue.. I offered to take the photos myself so that they all could be included in the photograph. She happily said of course and so I started shooting them. It then turned into a conversation.. they pulled a pillow out from underneath the blanket, put it next to them on the sand and warmly told me “come and sit down, have a chat with us!”

We started to have a chat and they really were just as lovely as they looked from afar. They’ve been living in Dahab for the past 17 years and the laguna is where they love to go with their kids on weekends. We spoke about the environment, tourism, the peacefulness of Sinai, about the names of their daughters and where they came from. I really felt like I had met them before, I was very comfortable and I could feel they were too.

If you look closely, they have the names of their daughters stuck on the back of their car 💙
