Warith Deen Umar - (7/23/1944 - 5/18/2026)

Warith Deen Umar was born in 1945. He was the seventh child in his family. His father was a minister in the Black Muslim faith. Umar was named in honor of Wallace Delaney Fard. In 1971, Warith Deen Umar spent time in prison. Before this, he met Louis Farrakhan. While in prison, Umar became a leader within the Nation of Islam group. During this time, he changed his name to Wallace 10X. After leaving prison, he went back to school. He earned a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice. He also received a Master of Arts degree in Islamic Studies. In 1975, he became one of the first Muslim prison chaplains in New York.

My grandfather was a great man who truly brought about Islam to the state, he fought hard and struggled for my family, even sacraficing his own body for us. He left behind a great legacy, having 11 children and many more grandchildren, and I am honored to be one of his grandchildren. I would watch my grandfather over the night on weekends these past few years, and although it was hard for him to speak, I always felt his presence to be very comforting. He was a very sweet and fun guy to be around. I remember how much he loved watching Bill Cosby and how I would turn on CoryxKenshin to watch with him, which he surprisingly liked. Its hard to process the death of a loved one, but it is impossible to deny the legacy they left behind. I love you a lot grandpa you did more for me then you know. by @shotson.kari
