Good taste has levels 👀

Most people don’t have “bad taste.” They’re just at a different stage of developing their eye.

You start by buying what looks familiar.
Then what looks expensive.
Then what looks cool.
And eventually, you stop asking where to shop and start understanding how to shop.

That’s when your home stops looking like a showroom, a Pinterest board, or the internet’s current favorite aesthetic — and starts looking like you.

Be honest: what tier are you in? 😂

One of the biggest misconceptions in interior design is that every beautiful space requires a full renovation.

Most of the time, it doesn’t.

The real transformation usually comes from direction.

Knowing what to keep.
What to emphasize.
What to contrast.
And what emotional tone the space should carry.

This client already had a strong foundation.

Beautiful flooring.
Warm walnut tones.
Pieces with real potential.

So instead of stripping everything away, we built around what was already working and introduced more depth, contrast, and atmosphere into the room.

That is usually the missing ingredient.

Not more money.
Not more furniture.

Just a clearer point of view.

And honestly, that is why I love this process so much.

Helping people see the potential in their home before making expensive decisions they may not even need.

Improve your space with intention.
Say yes to good design.

A lot of people confuse “safe” with timeless.

But they are not the same thing.

Safe design usually tries to avoid mistakes.
Timeless design creates feeling.

And that is why so many homes today feel visually clean… but emotionally empty.

A truly beautiful home has depth.
Contrast.
A point of view.

Not because every room needs to be loud or dramatic…

but because a home should feel like someone actually lives there.

That is the difference between a space that simply looks expensive…

and one that feels intentional.

I don’t push against beige because I hate neutrals.

I push against the idea that removing personality somehow makes a home more timeless.

Because usually, it just makes it more forgettable.

Improve your space with intention.
Say yes to good design.

From listing photo to a fully considered room.

Bespoke by SHOUK HOUSE is about building the complete direction.

color, furniture, materials, lighting, art, scale, proportion, and all the decisions that make a space feel intentional rather than simply furnished.

You bring me the room, your lifestyle, what you love, what you hate, and what you want the space to feel like.

I build the vision.

Just because you’re tired of seeing something doesn’t mean it was bad design.

We’re living in an algorithm-heavy world where the same room, color, sofa, material, or styling idea can be shown to us hundreds of times in a matter of months.

And eventually, familiarity starts getting confused with poor taste.

That’s frequency bias.

You stop asking whether the design actually works and start asking whether you’ve seen too much of it.

That’s why every brown sofa, burgundy room, chrome lamp, or warm neutral suddenly gets called “the new millennial beige.”

But millennial gray and millennial beige weren’t weak because they became popular.

They had actual design problems: lack of contrast, weak hierarchy, limited pattern, flat material stories, overly coordinated palettes, and not enough visual depth.

That’s a completely different conversation.

Good visual judgment means being able to separate “I’m bored of this” from “this is badly designed.”

Because if your opinion of a room changes every time the algorithm finds a new favorite, that’s not taste.

That’s trend fatigue.

And if you want to actually train your eye to make those distinctions, TRAIN YOUR EYE is linked in my bio. 👀

Your living room might be exposing your taste level 👀

From recliners with cup holders and TVs mounted way too high… to showroom-perfect spaces… to rooms that actually understand scale, proportion, color, lighting, materials, and restraint.

These are the 5 tiers of living room taste.

The biggest shift happens when you stop asking “What should I buy?” and start asking “Why does this actually work?”

That’s where visual judgment comes in.

And if you want to actually train your eye to see those differences, TRAIN YOUR EYE — A Guide to Developing Better Taste is linked in my bio.

There’s a reason your home can have beautiful furniture, great color, and still somehow feel flat.

It’s usually not that you need more stuff.

It’s that everything is doing the same thing.

Good design isn’t just about mixing materials. It’s about mixing their characteristics.

A smooth velvet sofa feels richer next to natural wood grain.

Heavy marble feels better when it’s balanced by something soft and airy.

Matte finishes come alive next to glazed ceramic or polished metal.

So instead of asking, “What material should I add?”

Ask:

What characteristic is my room missing?

Because the best rooms don’t just mix materials.

They balance them.

Never, ever, ever paint a dark and moody wall color in eggshell. 😭

I know eggshell is the industry standard for walls, but with deeper colors, that extra sheen can work against you.

It catches more light, exaggerates imperfections, and can make a rich, saturated color feel flatter and less sophisticated.

For dark and moody walls, I almost always prefer a matte finish. It absorbs the light instead of bouncing it around, which helps the color feel deeper, softer, and much more intentional.

Then you can bring a little sheen back through your baseboards, doors, trim, or other architectural details if the room needs contrast.

And yes, matte is a little less washable — but darker walls tend to hide small marks and scuffs better anyway, so I’ll usually sacrifice some washability for a finish that looks significantly better.

For less than the price of a bucket of paint, this is exactly the kind of detail I cover in my SHOUK HOUSE 25 Living Room Color Formulas Guide — linked in my bio.

Good taste has levels and your bedroom probably gives away which one you’re in. 👀

From matching furniture sets and hotel-lobby polish to better scale, lighting, color, restraint, vintage pieces and custom details, these are the 5 tiers of bedroom taste.

Your home doesn’t need more beige. It needs more contrast.

When everything lives in the same neutral range, even beautiful furniture and expensive finishes can start to blend together.

Color gives your eye somewhere to go.

Start simple. Pick two colors that support each other, then build from there with a third or fourth that adds contrast, tension, or softness.

The goal isn’t to make your home “colorful.”

It’s to make it feel layered, intentional, and alive.

Save this if you’re trying to transition out of an all-neutral home.

And if you want 25 complete living room color formulas already built for you, the SHOUK HOUSE Formula Guide is linked in my bio.

And the winner is…

After seeing all of your votes, I finally brought one of the rugs from my collection with HOLYA Interiors home.

Volcano has everything I love in a room: warmth, contrast, movement, and just enough red to keep those muted brown tones from feeling too safe. It’s handmade in naturally pigmented wool, and the texture in person is even better than I expected.

This collection was designed to feel like art for the floor, not just something that fills a space.

If Volcano is your favorite too, you can shop it along with the full SHOUK HOUSE x HOLYA Interiors collection through @HOLYA Interiors, tagged as a collaborator on this post.

Which one would you have chosen? 🌋
