Before Jason became synonymous with New Jersey as a cinematic slasher icon and before Georgie made it terrifying to wear a yellow rain slicker near a storm drain…there was ALICE SWEET ALICE! Filmed right here in Paterson, ALICE took elements of the Italian giallo films before it and laid the blueprint for what would become the modern slasher film that exploded in the decade after.

Shout out to @laurenzilla who designed the shop’s tee inspired by the flick.

Since people have asked, here are my thoughts on CRYSTAL LAKE. Each photo continues my review…damn you Letterboxd for not having this on there. HEAVY SPOILERS WITHIN!
*In short, yes I liked it*

CRYSTAL LAKE takes us back to the bloody beginnings of the FRIDAY THE 13th franchise, but this time, Jason Voorhees isn’t the main attraction. Instead, the spotlight falls on his mother, Pamela Voorhees, played by Linda Cardellini, in an eight episode prequel series that attempts to turn one of horror’s most infamous killer mothers into the center of a psychological nightmare. Set in the early 1970s, the story explores the events surrounding young Jason’s drowning at Camp Crystal Lake and the disturbing chain of events that eventually transforms Pamela into the murderous figure we meet in the original 1980 film. The series has plenty of recognizable slasher ingredients, homages, including grisly murders, troubled small town residents, sinister secrets, and a whole lot of blood. Unfortunately, it also occasionally feels like someone decided that a simple story about a mother losing her son needed a conspiracy board, several extra plotlines, and enough mythology to fill a filing cabinet.

As a lifelong, die hard FRIDAY fan, I was really looking forward to this…and honestly, I enjoyed the hell out of it. Hearing a young Jason talk and have a personality was my biggest hurdle and I welcomed a new vision for the future…sort of. It certainly takes his brooding, mysterious presence in the future seem less frightening and certainly a little cheesy, but that’s alright. I suppose you’re meant to separate this from the franchise. Perhaps I actually was starving for new FRIDAY THE 13th too much? The franchise has always had awful continuity, so watching them try to tie everything together in such a schlocky way was admirable to me. It may not be as serious as some wanted, but it ending up somewhat ‘dumb,’ kinda falls in line with where the series should be anyhow.
The series begins with Pamela struggling to cope with Jason’s apparent death, but the show quickly reveals that there is considerably more going on beneath the surface of this seemingly ordinary New Jersey town. Callum Vin by @shrednj
