Many members of the Shriners Children's team recently attended the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM) conference in downtown Philadelphia. This annual event brings together healthcare professionals, researchers, and specialists from around the world to share the latest advancements, research, and best practices in the care and treatment of individuals with cerebral palsy.

Introducing the Halo Hall of Fame at #ShrinersPhilly! ✨

Ricardo is our first patient to reveal his photo on the wall, and he chose the walk up song, “Empire State of Mind.”

The Halo Hall of Fame highlights our brave patients undergoing halo traction for scoliosis surgery.

Our staff was excited to celebrate him, his strength and resilience. 🎉

Camila and her doll are twinning in their halo traction! ✨

Kathi, Child Life Student at #ShrinersPhilly, made the halo traction for Camila's doll so Camila could play with a doll that looks like her. She absolutely loves it!💗

💡What is halo traction?

Halo traction involves a surgically placed metal ring (halo) attached to the skull with screws. It is connected to a pulley system (traction), with gradual weights added to slowly straighten the head and spine before surgery. Halo traction is typically a first step in correcting severe scoliosis, kyphosis, and other spine deformities.

Meet Dr. Qudsi! 👋

Rameez Qudsi, M.D., is a dual-fellowship trained pediatric orthopedic surgeon specializing in hand and upper extremity. He grew up in Toms River, New Jersey, where he volunteered as an EMT and decided early that he wanted to focus on medical care for children. Dr. Qudsi received a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Harvard College in 2006 and an M.D. from the joint Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program in 2011.

Meet Megan! ✨

Megan is a Patient Ambassador who is treated by Dr. Pahys for scoliosis. She received spinal fusion surgery when she was 13, and, now 19, is proof that spinal surgery does not have to slow you down.

She is a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo and does not have limited range of motion despite her spinal fusion surgery. She also stays active playing volleyball, wakeboarding, skiing and snowboarding. Without her spine surgery, her scoliosis would have inhibited her from doing the activities she loves.

This past summer, she attended the Summer Research Immersion Program at #ShrinersPhilly, and is currently in college studying on the pre-med track. Megan said, "Dr. Pahys completely changed my life for the better after my fusion surgery, and I want to help children the same way he helped me."
