“The Hindi word ‘alag’ translates as separate, apart, parted, or different. If mispronounced, it can also be read as ‘a lag’, as in a lag in communication or a glitch in a system.”

We chat with Tarika about her evolving creative process, the fine line between cultural influence and blind obedience within her work, and how BIPOC artists navigate expectations around referencing cultural identity in their art.
