DIASPORA DUOS

BIYA BIYA had a live session at @shrutiboxstudios to record our inaugural "Diaspora Duos" commission. We invited artists across diasporas to collaborate on intentional cross-cultural music.

@realhasanicannon on the West African djembe paired with South Asian Carnatic vocalist @sixpennysong gifted us with Alaipayudhe, an ecstatic meditation on the divine.

Nothing could stop Deevona. Not a change of location. Not delayed flights. Not a heavy downpour.

Despite all the last-minute twists and turns, you showed up and brought incredible energy with you.

Deevona Sound System was a night of experimental sound, rhythm, culture, movement, and community, bringing together artists from across the diaspora at Shruti Box Studios in Chicago. A month later, we’re still feeling it.

Ohhh yesss it is time once again to promote🤦🏻‍♀️ thank you all for bearing with me. The third installment in the Rooted Open Jam series is coming up on the 27th of October! We will be once again graciously hosted by @shrutiboxstudios, it seriously is such a perfect space for it l am so excited.

Last month’s jam was just the best, I was so happy that people came to jam and even just hang out and listen, that is truly all I could hope for; a space where anyone can just hang out, listen, and/or participate. Hoping to continue to cultivate this kind of environment.

The feature band this month will be the phenomenal @tenderloinband featuring @songsbyblu, it will be such a great show. This jam will also be Halloween themed, so please show up in costume! No obligation, but just know I will be dressing up as a pickle fr no joke.

I’ll eventually get better at writing shorter captions for these, sorry it’s always so long! I’m very passionate and have a lot to say🫩

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Vocal – Tanveer Singh Sapra
Tanveer Singh Sapra is a 7th generation vocalist of the Gwalior Gharana and a disciple of Late Vidushi Neela Bhagwat. Trained since the age of 10, he is proficient in Khayal, Tappa, Tarana, Thumri, Bhajans, and other semi-classical forms, and is also an accomplished poet and composer of bandishes and ghazals. Based in Chicago, he performs widely across India and the USA, collaborates with dance and Carnatic artists, and balances his musical journey with a parallel career in Data Sciences.

Tabla – Arun Sabapathy
Arun Sabapathy is a rising tabla talent within the new generation of Indian classical musicians. From a young age, he has been studying Tabla under Guru Pandit Shantilal Shah. While Arun’s training and performing experiences have primarily been in a classical music setting, he has begun to branch out into other musical fields, such as Carnatic fusion, world music, and jazz. Arun is an engineering professional based in Chicago, and frequently participates in musical events throughout the Chicagoland area.

Violin – Lucia Thomas
Lucia Thomas is a violinist and multi-instrumentalist in many genres of traditional and classical music. She studies Hindustani classical violin under the guidance of her guru, Maestro Indradeep Ghosh. As a Fulbright Schiller she has traveled to West Bengal to document the songs of the musical mystics, Baul and Fakir. She hosts a podcast called Banyan Roots, where these field recordings can be heard. Lucia plays with the band Ochin Pakhi, devoted to Bengali music. She has released three albums entitled Praner Alap: Meeting of Hearts, Baba Yaga’s Stew, and The World in Chicago. taken in Shruti Box Studios by @shrutiboxstudios

I’m hosting an open jam with Yash at Shruti Box☺️ I hope you all can make it.

I fell in love with jamming last year when I stumbled across Gallery Cabaret’s open jam with only my bongos on my shoulder hahah I know I looked crazy.

This is the second open jam in the Rooted series. I hope we can cultivate an inviting and creative space similar to the lovely jams I’ve had the pleasure of partaking in, with all the incredible musicians (and non-musicians) I met through those experiences.

We also have the pleasure of having @thetaildraggerz join us as this month’s feature band. It will be a great show.
