Nothing could stop Deevona. Not a change of location. Not delayed flights. Not a heavy downpour.

Despite all the last-minute twists and turns, you showed up and brought incredible energy with you.

Deevona Sound System was a night of experimental sound, rhythm, culture, movement, and community, bringing together artists from across the diaspora at Shruti Box Studios in Chicago. A month later, we’re still feeling it.

Deep gratitude to our artists and performers @discostan @sadubas @arjun___shah @yusuf_misdaq @osmankhan.ok @chelliahhh @asewonder

To our partners, supporters, collaborators, and vendors @shrutiboxstudios, @roshinicollective, @azadifolkschool , @rabbits.foot.studio, @superkhana, @eyekhanic.eats, chaipresso, and the Asian Giving Circle, along with every volunteer, neighbor, and community member who made Deevona possible.

And to everyone who came out, danced, listened, connected, and stayed with us through the rain: thank you for trusting the process, embracing the unexpected, and bringing so much warmth into the room.

You made it a night to remember.

In May we released our single “Island Getaway”. 🐚A song about sapphic heartbreak, and letting go of what is no longer meant for you, making room for warmth and growth. 🌱

Creating this song with the band and all of the incredible Chicago artists involved in this project was one of my favorite moments of my life. This song would not be what it is without the amazing people behind it.

Thank you to everyone who has checked it out, messaged us about it, shared it, cried to it, and sang along with us at our concerts.🫶🏼

Thank you to 💐:
Our band @scenicroute_music @mike_mania @kaionthekeys @danielgaydennn @cpmankowski @mr._chefboyardee_ @a_leone1 our manager @iseeubabygurl our sound engineer producer @cello.jess on cello 🤍

Ohhh yesss it is time once again to promote🤦🏻‍♀️ thank you all for bearing with me. The third installment in the Rooted Open Jam series is coming up on the 27th of October! We will be once again graciously hosted by @shrutiboxstudios, it seriously is such a perfect space for it l am so excited.

Last month’s jam was just the best, I was so happy that people came to jam and even just hang out and listen, that is truly all I could hope for; a space where anyone can just hang out, listen, and/or participate. Hoping to continue to cultivate this kind of environment.

The feature band this month will be the phenomenal @tenderloinband featuring @songsbyblu, it will be such a great show. This jam will also be Halloween themed, so please show up in costume! No obligation, but just know I will be dressing up as a pickle fr no joke.

I’ll eventually get better at writing shorter captions for these, sorry it’s always so long! I’m very passionate and have a lot to say🫩

You can RSVP for the jam from my story and bio! Hope to see you guys there.

Doors and jam sign-ups at 6.

Show at 7.

What a joy to finally see @sadubas (Robin Sukhadia + Ameet Mehta) live in their first-ever performance in Chicago as part of this past Saturday's Deevona Sound System gathering at @shrutiboxstudios. Closing out the day was the incredible @discostan.

Huge gratitude to @spaceshiftcollective for inviting SADUBAS to be part of Deevona Sound System ❤️

The #chicago rains brought everyone closer together. What could have scattered the energy instead made the whole experience feel more intimate, communal, and alive. We loved every minute of it.

It was incredibly special to share the stage with so many brilliant artists, in a space that felt so intentionally curated, with real care for the music, the neighborhood, the artists, and the many diasporic stories moving through it all.

Thank you SpaceShift for creating a space where experimentation, community, and culture could genuinely meet. Chicago, you were beautiful. Special thanks to @sidsid96 and Kitundu for the videos ❤️
