"How Much Weight Can I Bear?" is an installation piece investigating the spirits relationship with the widening and decomposition of the physical form as well as wounds that never quite heal. I wanted to encapsulate the feeling of "heaviness" into this piece. I wanted the sculpture to look like it was weighing heavily on a small infrastructure to really exaggerate the feeling of bearing weight. Ironically though, the piece really isn't that heavy in weight loooool but wounds never are taken in Houston City College by @shugi.e

"By incorporating the Black femmes’ self-awareness of her own atemporality, beauty, and
power for herself as a lesson for her sisters, Black femme aesthetics provides a timeless
embodiment of a cryptic being/doing/knowing now, in the future, and in the past: one that is
pedagogical, essential and “before” all we understand about representation."
- Rashayla Marie Brown (@rmbstudios) from her excellent dissertation "Black Femme Aesthetics, Reparations, and the Ancestral (After)life of Images"

Summer has shown me that my practice is invested to using different mediums to translate Black femme expression. How it be? Who did it? How I be doin it? What little black baby is watching? taken in Project Row Houses by @shugi.e

When I think about the time we had last week at the Advanced Collage Workshop I’m still kicking my feet and squealing!! 😆🫣🤭

That you @zinefesthouston and @theorangeshow for having me and allowing me to share my knowledge and love for collage work. I’m so grateful to have gotten the chance to connect with so many wonderful spirits 😭🖤🖤

This kind of work always revitalizes me and reminds me why I LOVE doing what I do 🖤🖤🖤✨ taken in Orange Show Center for Visionary Art by @shugi.e

“When Granger arrived in Galveston, there still existed around 250,000 slaves and they were not all freed immediately, or even soon. It was not uncommon for slave owners (unwilling to give up free labor) to refuse to release their slaves until forced to, in person, by a representative of the government. For Confederate states like Texas, even before Juneteenth, there existed a desire to hold on to that system as long as they could. “-NPR (Walsh)

There are pockets in time where we feel safe to celebrate the blood sweat and tears of our ancestors. Times where we feel liberated and Free, and other times when we feel like the work is not done. The older I get the more I see Juneteenth as not only a holiday, but a portal opening. An opportunity for us to open a larger line of communication with our ancestors to strengthen our communities and deepen our sense of connectivity to our culture. When you inhibit a black body (esp if you be dark or queer or woman presenting) there will always be someone willing or wishing to create violence against you. You’ve got to be anyways. To be is your birthright. 🖤🖤 taken in Galveston, Texas by @shugi.e
