Some experiments don’t work, some do. Spent the afternoon with the fabulous @si.sandys trying out seaweed as a developer- the negatives are a beautiful tinged green, sadly lacking in images, but we did get a chemigram developed in Cornish seaweed. Experimenting is great fun ( apart from when it doesn’t work 😉). I think the negs will end up in a collage - nothing wasted! by @si.sandys

@si.sandys BAP selected artist for 'Altered States' Exhibition for @photofringe 2026 I wanted to question and explore commonly held notions about photography and the portrait, such as: ‘the photograph reveals something of the sitters nature’ and ‘the photographer has to create a rapport with the sitter to make a good image’ Photographs of people are the most recognised and cherished of all subjects and I consider that meaning is not something implicit in an image, but is ‘projected’ onto by the viewer. I began to work with the wet plate collodion photographic process and using a large format camera to create portraits i became fascinated with the way the process imposed itself and almost dictated the results. There is also an uncanny realism and slight shift in rendering with a wet plate image which infuses the result. It slowed shooting to a single image every 15mins, which forces a completely different relationship to the photographer/sitter and the expectation of ‘results’. Looking back to the height of the summer we had very special large format Wet plate collodion shooting day. Making glass plates and tintypes and hosted by photographers @teimory.photo and @teimory. They made some beautiful plates in our makeshift darkroom. Thanks to all for a great day. I will be running more Wet plate and alternative photography workshop sessions this autumn. Its been a while (i know ) since posting. But after a break i am back. We had a fantastic session with the amazing @debhum4 teaching large format camera skills, camera movements, and shooting those rare polaroids at Shoreham harbour for urban and industrial landscapes. Its also fun loading 5x4 film in a pub with a loading tent. Doesnt stand out at all! If you are interested in learning this sort of thing contact me for teaching mentoring sessions. Total Solar Eclipse, Cornwall, 1999. Super 8 Kodachrome, '4 frame footage' Printed on C type paper. My big plan was to film the eclipse a few minutes before and after totality, but a fraction of a second into filming my camera packed up and refused to work again. I wanted to see if I could run an 'offgrid' Wet plate session outside. So with the help of this amazing crew we gave it a go. Big thanks to @noa_madethis @alexmelo1976 and @ola.teper for joining me for this. And it worked! All you need is good people, a field and a van load of old kit to make plates and tintypes while the sun shines . Here's some of the plates I made. I am excited to be running an Introduction to Plant Based Film developing workshop in Brighton @arttutorbrighton on Saturday 25th july 2026 The session combines a woodland photo walk and forage, where you will learn about the magic and science behind using plants to develop your films.
