Some experiments don’t work, some do. Spent the afternoon with the fabulous @si.sandys trying out seaweed as a developer- the negatives are a beautiful tinged green, sadly lacking in images, but we did get a chemigram developed in Cornish seaweed. Experimenting is great fun ( apart from when it doesn’t work 😉).
I think the negs will end up in a collage - nothing wasted!

@si.sandys BAP selected artist for 'Altered States' Exhibition for @photofringe 2026

I wanted to question and explore commonly held notions about photography and the portrait, such as: ‘the photograph reveals something of the sitters nature’ and ‘the photographer has to create a rapport with the sitter to make a good image’

Photographs of people are the most recognised and cherished of all subjects and I consider that meaning is not something implicit in an image, but is ‘projected’ onto by the viewer.

I began to work with the wet plate collodion photographic process and using a large format camera to create portraits i became fascinated with the way the process imposed itself and almost dictated the results. There is also an uncanny realism and slight shift in rendering with a wet plate image which infuses the result. It slowed shooting to a single image every 15mins, which forces a completely different relationship to the photographer/sitter and the expectation of ‘results’. By giving up some control I found a new way of making images.

💥Join us on 25 & 26 April for a POST weekend special!

🍀POST’s Earth & Eye festival celebrates nature through the lens of artists seeking to elevate its status, and highlight the importance of our connection to, and role within, the natural world.

Saturday 25th April:

🗣️📸Panel Discussion hosted by award-winning biophilic designer, Oliver Heath, explores how the lens fosters connection with nature, with a focus on the built environment, sustainability, ecology and the arts.
Panelists include Vanessa Rowlands (South Downs National Park Authority), Pooran Desai (OnePlanet.com), landscape photographer Finn Hopson, and Nicoleta Carpineanu (Composer, Producer, CEO Forests Without Frontiers).

🎙️🎥Artist Talks & Film Screenings from renowned local lens-based artists: David Blandy presents "Commons"; Murray Ballard presents "Enchanting Forest" & "Wings Over Mountains"; Angus Light presents "Agency for Nature".

Sunday 26 April:

🍀📷Join us for an immersive Nature Lab facilitated by FotoDocument & OnePlanet. Step out into the Hove neighbourhood with a camera (or phone) to photograph urban 'nature' scenes - this an opportunity to observe and capture how the natural world inhabits urban spaces. We're very proud to be supported by MPB for this creative sustainability lab - their model is the right way to buy, sell, and trade used camera gear!

🎞️There will also be workshops on both days led by experimental photographer Si Sandys including wet plate collodion and plant-based darkroom processing.

🧺A locally sourced picnic lunch will be provided on both days.

🔗Link for tickets is in the bio, we look forward to seeing you there! 🌱
