*Joonas Pulkkinen: As I understand the title of the show, Final Girl, it’s somehow about surviving. Besides installations and video works, you always have photos of your everyday life and the family you have built. In that way there’s also this question of how to survive the trauma, continue with your life, and be a parent yourself.

Juliana Irene Smith: Exactly.

JP: Of course, having a family of your own doesn’t erase the fact that you were once a child. I think childhood memories are so strong and influential that they somehow always remain.

JIS: Yes, and they come from smells, different associations, or sounds. If I hear Paul Simon, it remains connected to my stepfather. Someone who has smoked a cigarette and put toothpaste on—the smell is just like, eh… Smells and sounds can trigger memories, both good and bad.
The images of the present are also because, when you are an artist making work, you’re doing your day-to-day life, but that’s not your whole life. How do you compartmentalize, or do you compartmentalize, what’s what?

SIC participates in this year’s edition of @fototallinnfair with the presentation of Blueprint IX, (2026). A four-part photographic work from Helsinki-based artist @saulisirvio

Sauli Sirviö (b. 1980) is a Finnish visual artist working primarily with photography, sculpture, found materials, and publications. His practice is based on fieldwork and archiving, focusing on post-industrial landscapes, abandoned infrastructures, transitional spaces, and the relationship between analogue and digital technologies.

Warm welcome to the opening on Friday, 14 August, 18:00–21:00.

Somewhere in the building, a computer works around the clock, controlling the railway switches and signals. The trains it lets through carry people across the city. As they pass, they also set the installation in motion. It is unclear which of these functions is more important.

Kristin Wiking is an artist based in Helsinki and Vilnius. She creates installations in which simple materials borrow movement from invisible forces, often following an absurd logic.

We are glad to announce that Kristin Wiking is our summer resident at SIC. She will be working in the space until the end of August.

Kristin Wiking creates installations where simple materials borrow movement from invisible forces. During her residency, she’s letting passing trains do some of the work.

This video offers a sneak peek for the upcoming exhibition.
