“ The Island, the Sculpture, and the Rage⁣
⁣
An annotation on Juliana Irene Smith’s FINAL GIRL exhibition at SIC by Christine M. Kaiser⁣
⁣
You arrive at an island. Not a place to inhabit, but a place to enter and leave. The threshold says so plainly: visitors are welcome. What awaits is Juliana’s performative sculpture Final Girl — a term borrowed loosely from the idea of performative installation, where a work lives in the synthesis of event and object, presence and representation, rather than conforming to either one alone. Tie dyed fabric is draped over wooden furniture, its surfaces layered with photographs — glued, silkscreened, collaged — documenting a childhood in San Francisco. Faces are overpainted, marked with red dots, masqueraded. Multiple video screens, loops both scenes at once, in the same present moment: warm on its surface, glimpses of family time, mundane every day and overlaid with a performative act of dry swimming, the artist wrapped in a golden heat blanket, treading through water that isn’t there. The soundtrack underneath is 90s West Coast horror music, and it carries no fear at all — a choice as precise as anything else in the installation.⁣
⁣
Red is the color that the artist keeps returning to — blood, violence, flowers, and ketchup. The exhibition poster itself carries the image: Juliana in a shower, thick red liquid dripping down her face, playful and unsettling at once. One color, doing four or five jobs simultaneously, coexisting none of them cancelling the others. That refusal to let red settle into a single meaning is a refusal of a single history and present demands…⁣”

"Bar None"

This exhibition was supposed to be titled after a real bar, a 691 kilometer ride away from where I'm writing this text. The bar is behind the sea. My e-mail to the barkeepers, asking to borrow the name of their bar might have been lost in their spam folder. And then I had second thoughts about borrowing the name, too. I've only been to that bar once. What a cool bar, I thought.

The afterparty of a solo exhibition took place at the cool bar whose name I couldn't borrow. There was an array of beautiful and tasty spreads and enough free drinks, but the bread ran out too soon. There was nothing to spread the spreads on, and no one nominated themselves to go buy more bread. At the time I thought no one wanted to lower themselves. No one wanted to stoop to the level of bread handler.

That presented itself to me as a great mystery, and a key to understanding something about the cool bar and the city the bar was situated in. In hindsight I can understand how I read way too much into the situation because of the tricky mental state I was in at the time.

It did not occur to me that despite being a visitor to the city, a first time visitor to the cool bar, I could have, as well as anyone, gone out and bought more bread. I can still see the beautiful spreads, sponsored by the artist's gallerist, going to waste on a white-cloth-table on the makeshift terrace of the cool bar.

This is an uncurated exhibition. I have been invited by SIC to invite other artists to take part. I am an inviting artist. Because the exhibition is uncurated, it doesn't have a theme in the way a dissertation or a tightly wound novel might have a theme. But it could, maybe, have a theme in the way a bleary song playing on the radio of a rental car on a highway at night has one.

The theme is bread, rooms, letters, the people in the rooms. The theme is Berlin, Vilnius, Helsinki. The theme is there is a kind of social glow here, an iridescent shimmer, that is impossible to package and present to the outs

: Maybe I will ask you again: what do you think about the future of Draugų vardai?
Kotryna: About the future of the friends?
Raimundas: The future of Draugų vardai.
Kotryna: But this is also the future of our friends, by the way. Not only the future of Draugų vardai.

⁰ This is an act of friendship, by proxy. Trust in a friend trusting in their friends. If we could in turn put our trust in the friends those friend’s friends entrust, we build a trust without bonds. The doorknob is theirs to use and to reproduce as they feel suited to. It might give us entry to Draugu vardai on occasion. –K.D. #koenraaddedobbeleer

Draugų vardai (Friends’ Names): a conversation with Antanas Gerlikas and Kotryna Butautytė, conducted by Raimundas Malašauskas on 24 August 2026 at Draugų vardai, Vilnius @draugu_vardai . Published on the occasion of Bar none, a group exhibition at SIC, Helsinki, 12.09–11.10.2026. Created under a gracious invitation of Avocado Ibuprofen @avocado_ibuprofen, printed in a limited edition in Bratislava, now on display in Vilnius.

Kristin Wiking has created a brilliant, mesmerising work for SIC gallery in Malmi. The lower windows of the gallery space have been removed, and the thin plastic film makes the movement of air visible and audible. The passing trains, cars and the weather all contribute to the volatile movements. The work reminds me of the fog sculptures by Fujiko Nakaya. On view until Sunday 30 August! @kristinwiking @sicspace #contemporaryart #exhibition #helsinki
