As the youngest of six growing up in Connecticut, @marybethbarone felt the pull to perform early on and was driven by a steely determination that meant she overcame otherwise insurmountable obstacles. “I really wanted to be an actor and obviously a singer,” she tells SIDE-NOTE. “I’m a bad singer, but that didn’t stop me singing ‘My Heart Will Go On’ in my Fifth Grade talent show with piano accompaniment.” MARY BETH BARONE FOR SIDE-NOTE VOLUME 6. No one is doing it like @marybethbarone. This year, it’s been hard to have an internet connection and not encounter her particular brand of brilliance. Maybe you met the comedian via her viral Golden Globes red carpet interviews, where she had The Rock offer to pick her up with one arm. Or perhaps you watched Barone’s hit Netflix special, Galaxy Brain, in which she delivered cutting takedowns of everyone from white liberals and Joe Biden to Katy Perry fans and men who don’t announce when they orgasm during sex. Though for anyone who’s been paying attention, 2026 was simply the year that everyone else caught up. Barone has been charming for years, whether it be in her stand-up work, on her podcast with best friend Benito Skinner, Ride, or as Grace on ‘Overcompensating’. Blending hyper-niche pop culture knowledge with acerbic political commentary and personal vulnerability, Barone’s work has established her as a singular talent amongst her peers. And she’s only just getting started. “When I’m feeling deep emotions, that’s when I want to start writing,” Barone tells SIDE-NOTE. “Do I think it’s the healthiest coping mechanism? Probably not,” she says, delivering the sarcastic punchline with a saccharine smile: “But I guess you just keep running until it catches up with you.” MARY BETH BARONE FOR SIDE-NOTE VOLUME 6. French designer and former ballet dancer Alain Paul reorients the body through tailoring, in a series of corrections akin to those given in a rehearsal studio. Take the cleverly pinched shoulder dart that creates a fold, mimicking a dancer’s prominent collarbone; together with tilted shoulder pads that appear to rotate the shoulders forward. They prompt your own to settle back and your chest to open. “It was so interesting how this posture emerged,” Paul recalls of his now-signature silhouette, which debuted in his first season. “When you wore the jacket, you felt your shoulders push back a little bit. It gave a certain allure." For SIDE-NOTE Volume 6, @divya_bala profiles Alain Paul. Photography @rob.tennent by @side__note

At just 19-years-old, Davida McKenzie has worked with some incredible directors: Jane Campion, Luc Besson, Taika Waititi. Asked if there is one who broughtout a particularly strong performance in her, she's quick to respond: "Taika. He definitely has a special way about him that brings out exactly what he wants in his cast. 'Klara and the Sun' was such a unique experience," McKenzie tells SIDE-NOTE. "He brought out something special in all of us that he wanted to see in the scene, like the humour and just ridiculousness of it all. I had a lot of fun working with him."
