I had the honor of creating a mural for the Zijlweg West neighborhood forum and the Municipality of Haarlem. This project was truly special to me creatively, logistically, and in execution it was a real challenge. It took a year and a half just to get it started.

Through the many delays and unclear commitments, I learned a lot about patience and the role ego plays in trying to push things forward. I realized that forcing what’s beyond your control can work against the natural flow of a project, leading to frustration and disappointment.

By accepting what was, and letting go of resistance, this mural became a journey of growth. I came out of it richer and wiser, filled with gratitude for the process and the result. My work continues to be a reflection of inner growth, each project preparing me for the next step.

Charcoal, Light, and Reflection on Paper — Sidney Waerts

Gallery Chez Freddy art & design is pleased to present Sidney Waerts’ newest works at Art on Paper from 12-15 February. After years of drawing inspiration from the pulse of the city, Sidney now turns toward nature’s more slower, more meditative rhythms.

Working with charcoal has brought his practice to a new place—opening fresh possibilities and reshaping his visual language. By releasing control and allowing the material to lead, the works unfold intuitively, guided by curiosity, surprise, and a newfound sense of calm. Through delicate gestures and soft tonal shifts, light, landscape, and reflection emerge, inviting the viewer to pause, breathe, and look more closely.

Charcoal has brought my
practice to a new place, offering fresh possibilities to reimagine my visual language.

Working with it has taught me
to release control and allow the material to guide the process,
a surrender that feels both
liberating and transformative.

In doing so, I’ve reconnected with curiosity, joy, and surprise, allowing the work to unfold

This summer, I had the honor of creating a mural at the community building in Warten. The community invited me to design a piece inspired by the village and its surroundings.

The result is a lively composition depicting a youthful scene: children leaping from a jetty into the Frisian waters, with cows grazing peacefully in the background. They are accompanied by a rook and a swan, symbols that reflect the spirit of the village and its landscape.

The color palette shifts from nostalgic sepia to vibrant pink, representing the hopeful and optimistic future that lies ahead for the community.

This mural was inspired by the historical photo archives of Tegelen, reflecting the significant role that the production of bricks, roof tiles, ceramics, and sewer pipes played in the post WOII era.

This old chimney, which will become a monumental part of the new city park, features a mural wrapping around it measuring 3X8M.
