Owens River Gorge after flushing flows. Flushing flows imitate spring runoff. The increased flows move vegetation and sediment around the stream bed. It increases the spaces in the gravels making better habitat for insects and spawning fish. It scours the holes increasing habitat for bigger trout. Wadding up the river showed the piles of debris ant the effects on the riparian vegetation, stream side plants. No negative effects on the trout population as there were lots of trout willing to take nymphs and dries. A size 16 Adams parachute and size 18 bead head flash back pheasant tail nymph as a dry and dropper rig produced enough six to 12 inch browns to make for a great morning of fly fishing. Remember it’s a twenty to thirty minute hike in and than out of the gorge, there are lots of stinging nettles and rose bushes and be aware this is prime rattle snake habitat. by @sierrabrightdot

Sept-Oct is Fall colors and spawning brook trout. Fall starts high up in the mountains where the trees turn yellow and the reflection in the water makes the water look like gold. A dry and dropper is the set up for freestone creeks in the fall. I’m targeting the wild brown and brook trout by using a size 16 Adams parachute, size 14 stimulator, size 16 bead head flash back gold ribbed hare’s ear, size 18 bead head flash back pheasant tail nymph, size 16 green/gold brassie, size 16 zebra midge and size 16 tiger midge. I like fly fishing in the afternoon when the sun back lights the trees. by @sierrabrightdot

A windy day on the Owens. Indicator nymphing in the wind is a challenge. There were tangles and there were fish from four inch juvenile rainbows to losing a trophy rainbow. Fished the indicator two times the average depth of water above the nymph (six feet) and the weight 12 to 18 inches above the fly. Use size 18 bead head flash back pheasant tail nymphs, size 16 hot spot pheasant tail nymphs, size 12 stoner nymphs and size 12 green/gold wire Prince nymphs to fool trophy trout and juvenile trout. by @sierrabrightdot

Old school float tubing on Crowley lake. I ordered the camo float tube for a customer. Unfortunately he died of a heart attack before he could pick up the tube. I fished and hunted out of that tube until it fell apart. It was a way to honor my friend. This particular day we got a late start on purpose. There was a full moon and I knew the fish would be feeding middle of the day. We had doubles and triples all the way up to when I had to leave to work at Vons. When I paddled away both fly fishers were hooked up again. A great memory was made this day. by @sierrabrightdot

Sept-Oct trophy trout time. Trophy rainbow and brown trout are migrating out of Crowley Lake into the tributaries. Nymphing with size 12 stoner nymphs, size 12 green/gold Prince nymphs, size 12 Richard’s gold ribbed hare’s ear variation, size 14 copper John’s and size 14 Duracell nymphs in the deep holes, deep runs and cut banks is where the trophy trout are feeding and resting. There is a morning hatch of trico mayflies followed by a blue wing olive mayfly hatch that are providing fun dry fly fishing for juvenile rainbows and browns. by @sierrabrightdot

Owens River Gorge closure. Owens gorge access will be closed from September 17th through September 24th for flushing flows. Fly fishing will resume on Friday September 25th. Fall is the perfect time to be fly fishing in the gorge. The trout are feeding opportunistically on dries and nymphs. A dry and dropper rig allows the fly fisher to fish the surface and the substrates at the same time. A size 14 stimulator and a size 16 tiger midge is an excellent combination in the gorge. Wild brown trout from six to 10 inches will aggressively take your flies all day. I’m planning on being in the gorge on September 25th to see the effects of the flushing flows to the Owens River in the gorge section. by @sierrabrightdot
