Four Ways to the Source offers a grounding reflection that orients us back onto the blessed, vast reality of existing upon the Earth’s body.

“Here we take four directions in our approach to the source, making a circle with four poets from the last two millennia: at least one woman, at least two men, three Americans and one Japanese, at least one homophile, an uncertain number of mystics.”

Text, poetry compilation, and photographs by Aurora Solá @sighlab

Aurora is one of our favorite writers and filmmakers. Her work explores how we relate to and become landscapes.

On Wednesday, June 24, Aurora Solá @sighlab and Evy Jokhova @evyjokhova will be presenting a new participatory performance: “Fortuna’s Garden” — a psychological game based on the existing parlor game Werewolf (also known as Mafia), re-imagined on the basis of botanical knowledge and the wild forces of nature. Fortuna’s Garden is a meditation on the evolutionary biology of plants and their interaction with their human counterparts. Come along to become plants.

We still have some seats available at the table .

pauline oliveros wrote: “If you are a Buddhist, listening leads to the Buddhaverse; if you are a Christian, listening leads you to the word of God; if you are an artist, listening leads you to your material and to shape the material. If you are a scientist, listening leads you to theory and experiment. If you are a spy, listening may lead you to prison.”

for @sashawaltzandguests it led, of course, to dancing.

I had the terrific pleasure of interviewing sasha about the site-specific work she performed last week at @reethausberlin. charmingly, she kept referring to pauline oliveros as “oli” 🖤 and emphasizing how much pauline’s scores had been useful to them in rehearsal as they practiced modulating the quality of their attention.

in Dialoge, her dancers are asked to enact a spontaneous daytime dream, drawing not from a choreography but from the inner sensations and images that are emerging in them, giving them expression in movement. the work is downstream from what mary starks whitehouse developed in Authentic Movement. the idea is to side-step intellectual decision making or even the sense of being creative. eventually, the dancers feel that they are “being moved” and the resulting movement is simple and inevitable, just a naked truth. there is a mover and a witness, who practices bringing an undiluted, uncontaminated gaze to the dancer, and sometimes mover and witness are the same person. it is a kind of avant-garde, embodied offshoot of carl jung’s active imagination techniques. when it works, it is a thrilling magic, like getting to read the invisible text that occupies a room when people are in it.

“The story puts a face onto the mountain, or the mountain puts its face into the story.”

One and a half billion years old, the Mavecure Mountains in the Colombian Amazon are the granite remains of a former world, home to time’s deep roots and myths that accumulate like geological layers. The domes are considered the dwelling places of the gods for the Indigenous people of this place, who tell a story of a beautiful princess who fled to the mountains after being jinxed. Whenever it rains, her tears pour down the black slopes, leaving silver-white streaks.

Making its online premiere, “Mountains That Weep,” directed by Aurora Solá, draws us into the presence of these monoliths to find what makes them sacred. Featuring an original soundtrack using field recordings of Puinave and Curripaco flutes, rattles, and drums, this film introduces us to a geologist and an Indigenous poet, each reconstructing the ecological histories and ancestral memories of these mountains through traces of the past that remain.

Inspired reading from our friends at Farmacy: Manifesto on the Future of Food — an insurgent call for a radical shift in eating and farming that links soil health to human wellbeing. For those cultivating reverence for the earth and commitment to sustaining health, this pocket manifesto reveals how regenerating soil restores mental clarity and cultural vitality, urging us to rethink every meal as medicine for body, mind, and planet.

waves, shape-shiftings, snakes, and healing trees 〰️

somehow these connect to economic theory, a particularly obscure one from a century ago that became an excuse to invoke a future economy of care.

and a way to namecheck hildegard von bingen and andreas weber.

the word economy comes from the greek oikonomia — literally, the care of the home. what would it look like if “growth” was about how successfully we look after the home of our bodies, the home of our landscapes, and the home we make in each other?

I also got to engage a little bit with the fraught art of prediction-making. the question I’m working with is: can a prediction be useful even if it’s wrong?

consider this an exercise in pumping imaginations into futures we actually like. in a world so overrun with images of violence and industries of murder, the suggestion feels almost transgressive. consider this my defection from the cult of pure numb gloom. like martin shaw says, we are in the underworld, and in the underworld we need to “operate from both wonder and grief, at absolutely the same time.” I’m proposing we invest our fancies where we’d like them to compound.

many many thanks to @slowness for provoking this research and particularly to @drumondjoao and @amberliebmannn for making this essay look so good 🖤 (and to @lilycole for being my first reader and note-giver, what a luxury)
