Thank you to everyone who has submitted or is preparing an audition for this season’s Tulsa Sings! vocal competition.

Because this will be Signature Symphony’s final season, our final concert on April 24, 2027 will be a focus on the history of Tulsa Sings! and be a celebration of the orchestra. This new direction will be different from the Tulsa Sings! Totally 80s concert we had originally planned. This means we will not be moving forward with the audition process.

Thanks again to everyone who has been a part of our annual Tulsa Sings! tradition over the years 💜 A colorful graphic promoting the 'Tulsa Sings!' vocal competition update, featuring a stylized microphone and abstract shapes on a teal background. by @signaturesymphonyattcc

“Incredible. One of my favorite concerts I’ve experienced at Signature Symphony,” said one response to the survey in Saturday night’s concert program, and we agree!

Thanks to everyone who shared this phenomenal evening with us, and bravo tutti to all our musicians and guest artist @lancebryantmusic for an absolutely breathtaking performance 💜

We loved seeing so much joy in the audience, too! If you know our photographer, @resolusean got a photo of you or your group and you don’t see it here, keep an eye on your email for the album later this week 📸 Conductor Scott Seaton smiles over his shoulder at guest artist Lance Bryant who is playing tenor saxophone by @signaturesymphonyattcc

Do you plan to pick your concert ticket up from Will Call tomorrow? We’ve moved Will Call from a table in the main lobby to the ticket window in the Studio Theatre lobby so everyone has a bit more room and can more easily navigate the lobbies.

If you enter the building through the Studio Theatre door (shown in this video), Will Call will be directly in front of the door you came through. If you enter through the main lobby, you can access Will Call by going to the left and down the stairs. (To avoid the stairs, we recommend entering through the Studio Theatre door instead of the Main Lobby entrance. If you need help finding an elevator at any point during the evening, you can ask any VanTrease PACE team member, identifiable by a gold or blue/silver name tag.) by @signaturesymphonyattcc

One of the pieces coming up in our concert next weekend is "Three Black Kings," the last major work by jazz legend Duke Ellington. This powerful piece of music is a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr., connecting him with two biblical Black kings.

Here's some history and what to expect from this piece:

Three Black Kings was Duke Ellington's final major work and he died before it was completed. Knowing the end was near for him, Ellington wanted a final work to commemorate his good friend Martin Luther King, Jr. He dictated much of the work to his son, Mercer, while on his deathbed in 1974. With help from Luther Henderson, the composition was completed and premiered as a ballet in 1976.

Part 1 - King of the Magi, depicts King Balthazar with driving rhythms leading to sections of lush African and Eastern musical motifs. It features extensive use of the vibraslap, an instrument inspired by the quijada, which was created from the dried jawbone of a donkey. Slapping it creates a distinctive rattle that is hard to miss.

Part 2 - King Solomon, gives immediate relief from the frenetic pace of Part 1, featuring lyrical solos and an overall lighter jazz sound before the saxophone soloist (guest artist Lance Bryant) takes over.

Part 3 - Martin Luther King, is set in a slow gospel style, with the soloist switching out his tenor for a soprano saxophone.

If this sounds like something you'd like to hear, join us for the concert next Saturday, September 19th at 7:30pm! Next Saturday's "New World, New Voices" concert features Lance Bryant, whose talents as an arranger, composer, saxophonist, and vocalist have been featured on many projects throughout his musical career 🎷

Here's just a little bit about Lance Bryant (read more at the link below):

Musically educated both formally and through studies with artists including Frank Foster of the Count Basie Orchestra and Bruce Adolphe of Lincoln Center's Chamber Music Society, Lance's expertise has shone on many stages. He has played with, arranged for, and directed the Lionel Hampton Orchestra, been in a Spike Lee film (Malcom X, 1992), played as an on-stage musician in a Tony-nominated Broadway production (Swing!, 2000) and traveled extensively with other musicians including Phyllis Hyman, Jon Hendricks, Pete “LaRocca” Sims, and James Williams. In 2002 he released Psalm, the first of four Cds featuring original songs, and jazz arrangements of hymns and Spirituals. Currently, (when he's not touring), Lance serves as faculty with three of northern New Jersey’s most prominent jazz programs for teens - Jazz House Kids, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s Jazz for Teens and the New Jersey Youth Symphony’s Jazz programs.

Realizing the importance of spirituality and the blues as healing and empowering forces, Lance always makes sure to incorporate these elements from his cultural background into his music. He believes that the larger community of the world is in need of those same healing and empowering influences.
