Issue No. 15 of Bookazine Håndværk is out today, featuring a portrait of me and my practice — a conversation about transformation, materials, and the possibilities hidden in what we usually call waste.
Together with my two wonderful colleagues, Christina Schou Christensen and Thora Finnsdottir, I explore how discarded materials can become new resources in ceramic practice, and how working with waste can shift the way we think about resources, making, and material value.
A warm thank you to Rigetta Klint for capturing this work and conversation so beautifully.

Preparing for the Ødeland exhibition at NCECA 2026 in Detroit 🤩

Here’s a glimpse of a section from our co-created work, Ødeland Bowl Library. Each bowl is a variation of the same form, exploring some of the many possibilities of ceramic expression when working with high amounts of waste materials — including crushed medical glass, sanitary waste, granite mining byproducts, brick waste, and more.

This project is investigating how ceramic waste and other discarded materials can be transformed into new, meaningful ceramic works🤩

See pieces from the Ødeland bowl libery and all the test pieces in the Green Task Force project room at NCECA 2026.

In collaboration with @christina_schou_christensen and @signefensholt

A big thank you to the Danish Arts Foundation, Nationalbankens jubilæumsfond and L.F. Foghts fond for supporting our project 🙏

This glaze is made of almost pure waste: 80% recycled glass 20% ceramic waste and 10%dolomite added.
If you go to this years NCECA you can see our presentation of clays, slips and glazes based on waste materials.

Gallery Exhibition :: ØDELAND

The exhibition runs until October 11th, 2025
Munch Petersens Vej 9,
Rønne. Bornholm. Denmark

For millennia, we have drawn freely from the Earth’s riches. We humans have squandered resources as if they were endless. But the raw materials used in ceramics are non-renewable.
Ceramics are made from clay and minerals extracted from the earth’s crust. These are geological deposits created in prehistoric times. We are already seeing that some raw materials are no longer available, making well-adjusted formulas unusable. Are there alternatives to the virgin resources we dig from the ground?

Every year, enormous amounts of ceramic waste are discarded — tiles, pots, plates, toilets, and bricks. While most glass is recycled today, even that process produces residual waste. In the quarrying industry, by-products are often discarded as waste. Can all this waste be reused to produce new ceramic objects?

At the exhibition ØDELAND, Signe, Christina and Thora showcase experiments and outcomes of their work with recycled materials.
