One of the most exciting things I saw at NCECA in Detroit was this project “Odeland.” This is the extraordinary project by three Danish artists: Signe Fensholt (@signefensholt) Thora Finnsdottir (@thorafinnsdottir) and Christina Schou Christensen (@christina_schou_christensen). I’m grateful that the NCECA Green Task Force invited them to the conference.

The project focuses on using waste materials in new ceramic products and artworks. Signe, Thora and Christina have been collecting various waste materials for use… chiefly they have been using sanitary ware (old toilets and sinks) that were on the way to landfill, medical grade glass that was never used but has ‘expired’ (and has no other pathway to recycling) and granite dust from a quarry. They have made some very interesting tests with these materials… from clay bodies to glazes. These tests are what you see in my pictures here. I wish I had taken more!

In their own words they say: “every year, 380 tons of ceramic waste are disposed of on Bornholm… a very large portion of this waste consists of sanitary ware… once clay has been fired, it cannot become soft and malleable again. However, it can be finely crushed, and mixed with virgin clay, as well as waste from the glass and granite industries, it is possible to compose workable revisions for clay bodies and glazes… we have tried to find new paths, and we share our knowledge to help accelerate the development towards a sustainable ceramic practice.”

There is a 15-minute video on YouTube about this project where you can see how they process some of their materials, such as old sinks and toilets. Their crushing equipment was obtained through a grant. I found the whole thing very inspiring.
