@abigail.heisel what an honour to see you perform both Aurora and the Lilac Fairy in The Sleeping Beauty, now as one of Stuttgart Ballet’s newest Principals!

I still remember working with you all those years ago, both in the studio and on stage, for your very first full-length Sleeping Beauty.

To see you come full circle, dancing with such elegance, maturity and artistry, especially on Australian soil… well, I’d be lying if I said there weren’t a few tears.

And judging by these photos, some things change, and some things clearly don’t. 😂

What a journey, Abby. I’m so damn proud of you. Breathtaking!

A new chapter, with a lot of history behind it.

After 15 years living, performing and coaching professionally in the United States, I’m now bringing that experience home to Australia.

I’ve been teaching and coaching for almost as long as I was performing, and those years have shaped the way I see ballet — through both an Australian and American lens.

This space is about sharing that perspective through ballet coaching, teaching, repertoire, rehearsal direction and choreography.

My approach has always been about more than simply getting the steps right. Technique matters, but so do musicality, artistry, individuality, curiosity and understanding why we do what we do.

I’m looking forward to sharing the work, the process, and some of the knowledge and experience I’ve collected on both sides of the world.

Dad, I love you.

It’s such an understatement to say how much of an honour it is to actually be here, in person, to celebrate your 80th birthday with you.

You have been my constant support from day one. Even through the 15 years I spent overseas, you were always there; giving me guidance, perspective, and reminding me through the challenges to stay in good faith and, above all, to be a good man.

In your own life, you’ve faced so many unforeseen tribulations, stresses and challenges, and yet somehow you have always managed to come out the other side with strength. Maybe not always without a few battle scars, but still level-headed, forgiving, and able to keep moving forward.

The past two years since I’ve been home have brought a lot of adjustments for all of us, personally and as a family. Through the highs and lows, I’ve probably come to understand and appreciate you in ways I couldn’t when I was younger or living on the other side of the world.

As I get older myself, I realise more and more that becoming the person you want to be is always a journey. If I can carry even a quarter of your ability to remain calm, level-headed, forgiving and strong when life throws things at you, then I think I’ll be doing alright.

After so many birthdays celebrated from afar, being here for your 80th means more to me than I can really put into words.

I couldn’t be prouder to be your son.

Oh, WHAT A NIGHT!
@qcd.preprofessional gala was electric — a huge achievement made possible by the dancers, coaches, teachers, creative and production teams, donors, families and everyone supporting emerging artistic talent. Thank you for bringing it to life.

It was an honour to help continue the Gerald Arpino/Robert Joffrey legacy in Australia, sharing Arpino’s lively, joyful and deeply musical choreography with a new generation of dancers and audiences.

Heartfelt thanks to my friend and mentor @nicoleduffydance and the @arpinofoundation for their trust and generosity.

Still can’t quite fathom, we’re finally here?!

Gerald Arpino’s work challenged me, opened my eyes and had such an impact on my own career. Fast forward all these years, and to now be bringing a piece of that journey home to Brisbane, Australia, feels pretty surreal.

But the best part has been watching these dancers experience it for themselves. Seeing them struggle with something unfamiliar, then slowly find the freedom, confidence and joy within it… that’s what this was always about.

So grateful to my beautiful friend and mentor @nicoleduffydance and the @arpinofoundation for trusting us with Gerald’s legacy. To Daniel Gaudiello @dangndang , my partner in crime, for jumping into this crazy idea with me. And to Glenys and Rosanna for giving us the opportunity to make it happen.

And a massive shoutout to @grimes_film Ben, thank you for somehow capturing what these last few months have meant beyond just the dancing.

TODAY, we finally get to share it.

A little piece of my past, now part of their future. Let’s go! 🇦🇺

The ballet fanboy in me was pretty happy today. 😂

I think it’s always important to find ways to stay inspired and grateful, no matter where you are in your career.

Getting to work alongside people every day who carry so much knowledge, history and legacy from Australian ballet culture is something I don’t think I’ll ever get used to.

I’ve been meaning to write this for a little while now.

@nicoleduffydance thank you.

I’ve found myself reflecting on those two weeks quite a bit over the past month. Working alongside you again after all these years was one of those rare, full-circle moments I’ll always treasure. The last time we shared a studio, you were coaching me for the stage. To have stood beside you in an artistic capacity, helping bring Birthday Variations and Light Rain to a new generation of dancers, was incredibly special.

You probably don’t realise the impact you had on me all those years ago. So much of who I am as a teacher and coach comes from what you instilled in me as a dancer. Seeing you inspire our students in that same way was something I’ll never forget.
Your passion for this art form is infectious, and I know every dancer left that studio a little richer because of you.

It was also such a joy to show you around Brisbane, my hometown, and spend time catching up after so many years. Thank you for your friendship, your mentorship, and for making the journey to Australia to share your artistry with all of us.
