POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

As I cut their silhouette at a golden wedding reception in Guernesey yesterday, one of the hotel staff came around to inform us that all guest were moving through for dinner.

Without a moment’s hesitation he replied:
“We’ll be with you in a minute, we’re just being guillotined!”.

Maybe it was the close proximity of the island to France, but in thirty years of making silhouettes I’ve never heard the experience of posing for one described quite like that!

On the final day of Chat Noir, the magicians (@neilkelso and @pat.magus) conjured up a special treat for the wonderful people who brought this dream to life. ✨ We arranged for the legendary @silhouettist Charles Burns to visit us backstage and capture everyone’s beautiful essence with nothing more than paper, scissors, and his magnificent artistry. Thank you to the maestro @valeriebarr.music for capturing this timelapse! 🖤 130 years ago, the Chat Noir was famously home to sensational shadow puppetry shows, so it seemed the perfect way to capture these magical memories. 🐈‍⬛ taken in The Lost Estate by @silhouettist

👀 Can you spot yourself?

Throughout the Caversham Arts Trail 2026, @silhouettist has been creating a beautiful accordion book filled with hand-cut silhouettes of venue 20’s visitors.

Regular visitors to the trail will instantly recognise Charles’ distinctive work, creating detailed portraits and scenes entirely by hand. Now the book is filling up… can you spot yourself?

There’s still time to visit Venue 18 this weekend, and maybe become part of the artwork too!

✨ Meet Venue 18

A fascinating mix of paper art, photography and miniature worlds!

@silhouettoist (Charles Burns) explores drawing through paper cutting and silhouette, creating intricate works using scissors as his primary tool ✂️

@ndburnsphotography (Nicholas David Burns) creates deeply sensory photographic work, shaped by perception, touch and lived experience — using film and experimental processes.

@miniscuriaminiatures builds incredibly detailed miniature scenes, inviting you to slow down, look closely and discover the story within each piece ✨

And @telltailsphotography captures personality and movement through expressive outdoor and studio photography.
